"In 1906, Gertrude Stein had her portrait painted by Picasso. To call
the collaboration difficult would be to vastly understate the case.
According to Janet Flanner, Stein posed no fewer than eighty (yes, 80)
times, after which Picasso impulsively wiped the face clean, declared
that he could not "see" her anymore, and fled to Spain.

Some time later, Picasso, having completed the work without a sitter,
presented the portrait to its surprised subject - who complained that
she looked nothing like the figure in the painting. "No," Picasso
curtly replied. "But you will.""
