He pushed the old wooden door open and stood upon the threshold. To his utter shock, the place was deserted. Even the ghostly barmaid was nowhere to be seen. He wondered for a moment where a ghost goes when it isn't visible, but the thought flitted away. He had work to do, though he couldn't imagine how he was to begin if he couldn't even get an ale. Perhaps the old man was right: this was a fool's errand. But what else could he do? Where else could he go? He had had a far shorter sleep than most of his kind, and yet here he was, alone in a once-familiar place with not so much as a marsh light to guide him.
And yet, a fire burned in the hearth. Delicious smells drifted into the common room from the kitchens. There must be *someone* here. Was it not the promise of his people to never sleep beyond the things they had known awaking? Unless that had been a lie, too...
No, he would not allow himself to think that way. He was here now, and there was nothing for it but to see what could be done. He sat down and waited.
