Generic domain name Crosswordpuzzles.com has sold at auction for
$210,000.
The site was previously run by internationally renowned crossword
writer Myles Mellor but has now been passed into new hands.
It sold at the recent Moniker sponsored TRAFFIC East Miami 2007 Domain
Conference auction where other domains such as criminallawyers.com and
table.com were also sold for record amounts.
Although the price tag may appear expensive, owning a website with a
generic domain name can bring in huge profits as it attracts users
again and again.
Unlike confusing monikers which can be difficult to remember or spell,
people on the look out for the latest puzzle can type this domain
straight into the address bar.
This not only saves time but allows users to get directly to their
product without having to make use of a search engine and becoming
overwhelmed with information.
Before the auction kicked off, research firm Zetetic predicted
Crosswords.com would be the highest selling domain of the day, but it
was pipped to the post by a number of others including computer.com
and investment.com
