Germany-based reseller of Internet domain registration services,
www.1and1.com is arguably the most crooked predator in the business. They
practice a variety of fraudulent activities, one of them being that they
never release a domain, if its registered owner wants to transfer it to
another registrar. They simply grey-out the Administration button in your
Manage Domains page of their web site, so you can not authorize the
transfer. When an owner complains to sup...@1and1.com, they respond that
everything's cool, you can transfer it, we're not holding your domain, but
the transfer never takes place, since they do not ever release it.

Beware of 1and1.com !!!

I's surprised they are still in business. The Web is full of very bad
references about 1and1.com Here are only a few of them:

I received an email from them today stating that one of my domains was being transferred:
"1&1 Internet Ltd. has received a request from 1&1 Internet Inc. on behalf of Charalabos Triantafillou CA-T2K 4R2 Calgary, 6715 Huntsbay RD NW
on 13-Aug-2013 for us to become the new registrar of record."
What jerks!
