Disneyland questions

I'm new to this newsgroup. I had a few Disneyland questions that I was
hoping you could help me with. If I can just get my thoughts together so I
make sense...LOL!
Ok, first, I was planning a trip to WDW, since we've never been there, but I
think we've decided to go to California instead, since I grew up there, and
that's where all my family is. I was thinking of staying one night at the
Disneyland Hotel, so we could do Disneyland one day and DCA the next. Do
they have 2-day park hopper tickets? Also, If we do go, it would have to be
around the end of June, since we have kids in school (not this year....next
year), and I was wondering if there was anyway to get discounts on the
hotel? I'm familiar with the different ways to make your stay at a resort
not so expensive at WDW, but not at DL. Also, how far in advance should I
book the room in the hotel? We don't want anything fancy....just two queen
sized beds, so the four of us have a place to sleep.
I'm also wondering about character breakfasts. I was looking at Goofy's
Kitchen, and thought that might be a good one for my boys, but was wondering
what characters, besides Goofy is there. Is there a character breakfast
that includes Pooh and friends? Where can I go to see pictures of the
rooms at Disneyland hotel?
Are there any shows that are a "must-see" for 2 boys ages 9 and 6? Or for
my husband and I? I know we will DEFINITELY want to see Fantasmic. We were
there in 2000, and missed it because my little one couldn't deal with the
crowds, and the people were SOO obnoxious that they kept pushing and shoving
me while I was holding him....and the show hadn't even started yet!! It was
REALLY ridiculous. But I'm hoping that he will be able to cope with the
crowds a bit more this time around.
Ok....and I think I only have one other question....what guide book would
you suggest I get? I really like the Passporter for WDW, but I don't think
they have a Disneyland version yet. Oh yeah, and besides Intercotwest.com
and mouseplanet.com....are there any other websites where I could read
reviews of dining places, hotels, and the parks? I REALLY want to see
pictures....so I can picture it in my head....so if you know of any
pictures, or have some yourself that you would like to share..I would really
appreciate it. Sorry for the length of this message, but thanks to anyone
who can respond to my questions!

It really varies day to day, probably the only quasi-guaranteed characters to
be there are Goofy and Pluto. . .
I can list off character from the dinner shifts, but that probably won't help
much. I do remember Aladdin Jasmine Alice and Mad Hatter for breakfast. . .
Can't remember anyone else, more than likely Chip and Dale. . .

Yes. The Plaza Inn breakfast in Disneyland generally has Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore,
and Piglet. Sometimes a random guest appearance by Pluto or some other random
character (I remember seeing Max in there once)

Aladdins Oasis in Disneyland, If they like Buzz Lightyear, he has a show in
Tomorrowland (It's OK. . .), I've heard sooooo many people talking about Billy
Hill and the Hillbillies (never got a chance to see them myself). Mickey's
Defectiv. . . . Errrr, Detective School show is pretty bad though.

is the official one, but I got one called ECONOGUIDE that is also good.
There's the Frommer's pocket guide to Disneyland, and the UNOFFICAL GUIDE TO
DISNEYLAND too. The latter has good touring plans. I'm doing this off the top
of my head, but if you email me I would be happy to give full titles, authors,
ISBNS, and all.

book. All the attractions are rated on a star-based system divided into age
groups. For example, where Indiana Jones scores incredibly high on the Teen
and 30-something set, it wasn't as well received by seniors.

Unofficial guide to WDW, so I think maybe I should check out the one for
Disneyland. But hoping that the Disneyland Passporter will be printed off
and ready by the time I'm ready to get planning my trip. LOL!
Does anybody know how far in advance I should book the hotel room? I just
talked to my husband last night, and he said he'd rather stay for 2 nights
instead of just one. Thanks again!

I was just there at the end of Jan, and alas, no 2-day hoppers passes. 3 days
is the minimum they come in. So we just did DL for both days we had
scheduled, since DCA didn't have enough stuff that we were interested in,
especially since my wife had no intention of getting on the roller coaster.

Even if I had kids, I'd go during school and pull them out for the trip. The
low crowds you get during the week when school's in session is fantastic. We
were there in late January, and while Monday was a little crowded, Tuesday saw
DL practically deserted and no wait over 10 minutes.
We used the Quckpass system twice, and batted .500. It worked great on Monday
when we used it for Big Thunder, but Space Mountain was abysmal. The cast
member working the entrance had no idea what was going on really. When we
asked him where the quickpass entrance was, he directed us to a line that
wound us all over the upper deck and finally to a closed door. Opening it, we
found a back entrance to the inside que area, where we basically just had to
cut in line. Very confusing, not well done.

I love the Birnbaum book for showing good graphics and pictures of everything,
but the Unofficial Guide gives the best hints for maximizing your time and
avoiding lines.

Some of the hotels and motels have two day hoppers available. But these aren't
sold at the DLand ticket booths. It's something special only availble at the
hotels and the Anaheim Visitor's Center. When I was there I bought at my hotel
a three day hopper that gave you a fourth day for free. Great deal I didn't
know about from other sources. These tickets also are not availble at the
DLand ticket booths to my knowledge. Only at the hotels.
