I do apologize if this question has been asked before. Who is the
narrator in the Haunted Mansion? My husband says Vincent Price. I
don't have a clue. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

The Ghost Host voice belongs to the late great Paul Frees!
Also famous for the voice of Boris Badanov from Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Another place to hear his voice is on (imho) one of the best satire
albums ever recorded... Stan Freebergs Presents The United States Of
America. Mr. Frees did all of the narration and a couple of voices in
it. He was in my own opinion one of the best voice actors of the time.

I agree, Paul Frees was one of the best, most versatile voice actors
around. He was also Ludwig Von Drake and the narrator of Monsanto's
Adventure Through Inner Space ("...Dare I go on?!?"). But he is only my
2ND favorite DL voice. I vote for Thurl Ravenscroft. He is also heard
singing in the HM as well as POTC and others. You can easily pick his
voice out by listening for Tony the Tiger (his day job!). That DEEP
voice is really "G-R-R-R-E-A-T!!". Anyone know if he's still around?

If I remember correctly, Thurl is still around, and lives here in my
hometown! He's living in either Escondido, or Ramona, California,
which is about 30 minutes north of San Diego. (I live in Escondido).
I believe there was a story on him in a local paper a year or two ago.

Close, but not 100%. See my earlier post. Tony the Tiger and the singing
bust (the broken one, I believe) are Thurl Ravenscroft. I don't know if
Thurl can NOT sound like Tony the Tiger, but Paul Frees could do many
different voices/dialects. Both are used extensively in Disney rides and
soundtracks. I am told Thurl used to be in a famous singing group circa
1940's-50's. That may be why he's featured in songs. I don't know if Paul
sang. I believe Paul CAN be seen in THAT DARN CAT as a detective or a
reporter. I just know I hear his voice in there somewhere. I don't remember
who introduces Mr. Lincoln, but probably Frees.

He's the same Guy who did the voice of Boris Badinov on the Rocky and
Bullwinkle show, Paul Freese.

He is also in War of the Worlds as the narrator and a news reporter, so

Well, he was in a special on the making of "How The Grinch Stole
Christmas" recently. He commented on the fact that he did the song and
June Foray did the voice of Cindy Lou Who but somebody messed up and
Boris Karloff was the only one who got any credit.

He's also the voice of "Kirby" the vacuum on "The Brave Little Toaster"

Thurl Ravencroft also heard singing "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" in

Paul Frees did the narration for Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln.
As for Thurl's group - they were The Mell-O Men.

Hi everybody!

Spurred by this latest confusion over who does which voice in which ride,
I'm inspired to create a web page giving the proper credit to the voice
talents who are heard throughout the Magic Kingdom. Actually, I've
thought about this for the last several weeks...

Does anyone think this would make a good subject for a web page?

More importantly, can any of you help me find info on who's voice is
where?
(i.e., who does the voice of Abe Lincoln?, etc.) I would prefer E-mail
for this, to save everyone else's bandwidth...

Thanks!

Yes he is!! Obviously you missed the recent Halloween episode of
"Disneyland Inside/Out" (on the Disney Channel) that featured an interview
with Thurl...

And also...

Thurl also is the voice announcing the arrival of DLRR trains into the
station (I don't know if he is also the voice heard *on* the trains), and
the voice of "Fritz", the German parrot in the Tiki Room. That's a bit of
a stretch from Tony the Tiger, don't you think? :-)

I hate to disagree, but Fritz sounds like Tony the Tiger with a German
accent. But then, I'm such a big fan of Thurl and of Paul Frees that
I can usually pick them out when I hear them.

In this happy holiday season, let's also remember that Thurl Ravenscroft
is also the singing voice of the Grinch. Not Disney, but truly cool
anyway. Boris Karloff is the speaking voice.

I'm pretty sure Jack Wagner is the voice announcing the trains into the

And just to go full circle..... Vincent Price did do the Phantom Manor

to Mr. Price, but he can't hold a candle to Paul Frees.....

I used to think that, too -- but then I saw and heard Thurl saying on the

station announcement was recorded by Thurl himself.

Okay, let's clear this up.

Jack Wagner was the original "voice of Disneyland" and his voice still be found
in many places throughout the park. All four RR stations have the "Your
attention please..." announcements, Matterhorn has "Remain seated please /
Permane ser setavo por favor" (yes, I know that's probably not how the Spanish
part is spelled...) and the faster "Remain seated" as you go up the first hill
inside the mountain, Rocket Jets has "Please use the self-service elevator...",
and the Monorail *used* to have his great narrative as you passed "over Harbor
Boulevard, the street you probably used to enter Disneyland today".

Thurl Ravenscroft does the narrative on the DLRR, one of the singing busts in
HM, and one of the birds in the Tiki Room.

Paul Frees is the Ghost Host in the HM, and as far as I know doesn't have any
other voices in the park.

And the one that currently does the most voice work for DL, WDW, and apparently
every Disney, Touchstone, Hollywood, etc movie? Don't know his name, wish I
could forget his voice. "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Soon, the
thrilling spectacle of Fantasmic will begin..."

Thurl, God bless him, is incorrect on this one. It's the dulcet tones of
Jumpin' Jack Wagner heralding the arrival of the steam trains.

(Oh and Thurl is also wrong when he says that it was he who played bass
on "I Am The Walrus." We all KNOW it was actually Paul Frees!) ;-)

Jose is Wally Boag, Michael is Fulton Burley (both formerly from the
Golden Horseshoe), Fritz is Thurl Ravenscroft, and I can't remember who
the French one is. Thurl Ravenscroft is also the voice of Tangaroa (the
Father of the Gods or something like that--the big tree thing in the
outside pre-show)

By the way, in answer to some previous posts (ooh, now that AOL is
unlimited, I can actually reply to things!):

Paul Frees: At Disneyland: Narrator for Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,
The Ghost Host in the Haunted Mansion, previously the narrator aboard the
Adventure Through Inner Space, and a few voices in Pirates of the
Caribbean ("no fear of evil curses, says ye"). Outside of Disneyland:
Boris Bananov, several voices in Rankin & Bass animated specials,
including Meister Burger Burgermeister (or something like that) in Santa
Claus Is Coming to Town (and yes, he sings), the Peter Lorre imitation on
Spike Jones's "My Old Flame," and much more.

Thurl Ravenscroft: At Disneyland: Narrator on board the Disneyland
Railroad, Fritz and Tangaroa, the broken bust that sings lead on "Grim
Grinning Ghost," a couple of the Pirates of the Caribbean (one of the trio
with the donkey and the one teetering on barrels at the end), Buff the
Buffalo Head in the Country Bear Jamboree, and he sings a chanty (I forget
the title) on board the Columbia that plays as you pass New Orleans
Square. Outside of Disneyland: Sings in The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
("You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch") and Snoopy Go Home ("No Dogs Allowed"),
voices in 101 Dalmations, the original (The horse), Aristocats (the bass
player, if I remember right--he sings a line in "Ev'rybody Wants To Be A
Cat" in a voice that sounds like his Fritz voice), The Brave Little
Toaster (Kirby), of course Tony the Tiger, and much more (in other words
that's where my memory seems to be stopping). He also usually does the
narration for the Laguna Beach Arts Festival's Pageant of the Masters each
year.

After working on the trains for several months in 1990, I'm pretty
positive Thurl did the narration on the trains, and I don't think
they've changed it since then. Jack Wagner's voice isn't as deep, it
sounds more youthful than Thurl's rumbling bass.

I think he retired from the Laguna Pageant of the Masters about 4 years
ago. My friend, who studied the art of voice-overs for awhile, met
Thurl at his last performance.

When the L.A. local news programs announced the death of Jack Wagner, they
described him as "The man who did the Disneyland railway announcements,"
and threw in a sound bite of it. Besides, it sounds like Wagner, and
doesn't sound like Thurl. I don't blame Thurl for getting confused about
which voices he has and hasn't done, considering how many he HAS done.

By the way, is there any way of getting copies of Disneyland Inside Out?
We don't have cable, you see...

While we are on the subject, there is a different Ghost Host Voice on the
Disneyland Soundtrack Album "The Haunted Mansion." It is done by Pete
Renoudet, and it follows the same script as the attraction (with lots more
monologue thrown in). It has a much more ethereal sound, very heavy on the
echo effect. Also Ron Howard does a voice of a teenager who accidently
gets trapped inside the Mansion.

As a young child, I remember visiting the Mansion in the early 70's. I
seem to recall that the voice was the same one as on my record, but as I
have a very "active" imagination, I could be wrong.

Does anybody know if Pete's voice was ever used in the Mansion, or was it
ever intended to be used? Plus if Paul's voice was the only one, then why
isn't he on the soundtrack album like all the other original voices?

Thanks for your help!

On the Disney Channel's "Inside Out" Halloween show done about DL
recently, they interviewed Thurl Ravenscroft and he confirmed he was the
voice of the DL Railroad and one of the voices in Country Bear Jamboree as
well as Haunted Mansion.

His voice BTW is used in WDW and Tokyo DL as well.

The Mansion soundtrack of today is the same as 1969, basically.
The narrator has never changed; it's always been Frees.

Copyrights. Financial royalties. Stuff that you wouldn't
imagine was an issue interbally at Disney, but is.

I think that was just a misque between editing. What Thrul did was say
something like 'If you wait a few minutes, you'll hear another one"
and points to the train. I think one of the techies didn't know what
Thrul was talking about and assumed it was just the announcer voice.
(He was being interviewed at the Haunted Mansion in front of the pet
cemetary.) I've heard the train narration from there before so I'm
pretty sure that's what he wanted them to hear.

Need more info on Thurl Ravenscroft. Check out the Thurl Ravenscorft web
page at http://members.aol.com/bejacob/thurl.htm. It may help clear up
some questions (then again it might start more).

There is no doubt that Thurl, Paul Frees, and Jack Wagner managed to do
most of the voice work at Disneyland. Sure there were others, but these
three covered a lot of ground.
