To Moderator: Please Post
I recently came across a posting
regarding Barry Braimah, an African-American
man wrongfully arrested and imprisoned
in France in 1994.
At the time of trial (without any due
process), Mr. Braimah received an 18-year
sentence. An international Human Rights
organization did an independent investigation
and found that racism, xenophobia, and
failure of police to follow established
procedures are the main reasons for the initial
wrongful arrest.
Even before Mr. Braimah, arrived in France,
the police were investigating a man
suspected of drug smuggling. The physical
description of the suspect is totally dissimilar
to that of Mr. Braimah's; one man is short,
the other tall, one stocky, the other thin.
The only physical characteristic shared by
both men is that they are both of African
descent.
Mr. Braimah is presently
behind bars (now entering his 5th year),
sharing an unheated cell with both a murderer
and a rapist. He sleeps with gloves and
hat on ... and one eye open.
Currently, there is a letter writing campaign
in progress.
I have just sealed my own envelope and will
be mailing off my letter to President Chirac.
Civil Rights World Watch is asking for
any and all who are appalled
at this miscarriage of justice to do the
same.
Please do not believe that your effort will go
unnoticed. Letter writing campaigns have worked in
the past. Hopefully, this campaign will work,
too, if people get involved.

TOURIST IN PARIS: A young American was wrongfully arrested
and condemned to 18 years, with no right to appeal
In July, he will pass his 5th consecutive birthday behind
French bars. If he survived to be released, he would
be nearly 50 years old in the year 2012. In the prison
where he is, depression and suicide go unchecked, and
they say of it, forbiddingly, that "...you check in but
you might not check out..."
Both English and French versions of this amazing, tragic,
still-evolving affair, are found at the JUSTICE site:
http://www.freeyellow.com/members2/african-diaspora/justice.html
A concerted response is needed from the international community
on this person's behalf. Please help send appeal letters to
French President Jacques CHIRAC (E-mail us, and we will send
you sample appeal letters, or go to the Justice site above).
And what are the American Embassy and State Department doing?
Nothing.
