One of the issues I'm always having when several blind people of later years
want to get together, is actually finding one another in a strange location.
I know many younger blind people tend to use smart phones to at least end
up close enough to hear one another, but is there any simple technology
which can be used to home in to each other in a location that does not
require shouting and making daft noises with complicated phones?

Use a dog whistle as a sound source and either a dog or an inexpensive
battery-powered bat detector as receiver amd ultrasonic sound source
locater.

Ah, that would be a nice idea, if a little odd.
I have visions of people running down the street perused by dogs and bats.

You asked for "simple technology", and there isn't much that is simpler
than a dog and a dog whistle.

Also, the bat detector is an ultrasound receiver (alternative to the ears
of a dog), so it won't be attracting a flock of bats.

I know honestly. It just poked my siller side, like the jokes about guide
dogs etc.
We have the Barnes wetlands near here and there is a protected bat colony
there and you can if you want to go out at night around these parts with a
bat detector, and hear them.
There are even guided tours.
