A friend of mine who went on the London demo just sent me this link.
Now perhaps the rest of the schemes will die a death (I wish!)
Sincerely Chris

I notice that the link has split itself into 3 lines. Sorry about that.
Blind charity celebrates end to 'shared streets' plans near Harrods
Ruth Bloomfield
09.12.09
Plans to merge roads and pavements around Harrods and make pedestrians,
cyclists and motorists share the same space have been dropped.
Kensington and Chelsea council has decided not to press ahead with
1million proposals to revamp parts of Hans Road and Basil Street.
The council is currently facing legal action from the blindness charity
Guide Dogs, which has launched a judicial review over its "shared
surface" plans for nearby Exhibition Road.
Kensington and Chelsea decided to drop the Harrods schemes, after
residents attacked the proposals. They raised the same concerns as Guide
Dogs, that visually impaired pedestrians - who rely on traditional
raised kerbs to stop them straying into the road - would be put at risk.
They also claimed the proposals would increase noise, disruption and
anti-social behaviour in the area.
Now the council, which has spent the last five months consulting local
residents about the proposal, has abandoned the plan.
Instead, it will widen the pavements in Hans Road to give pedestrians
more space. Work starts next November

Works here but does need a bit of unwrapping - even Notepad wraps it
(I use Notepad to copy and paste links from the newsreader to the
browser if they wrap).
Andrew.

Wouldn't have thought so. My friend's total.
But I've discovered that papers often don't keep their news on line very
often so one snooze and you've had it. Obviously to stop people like
me.
