Bah. The top five movies that I like are:
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Carrie
Dawn Of The Dead
Er, that's three. Oh well. Others I like, but not enough to feel
emotional about them. So much so that I can watch these films no more
than once or twice a year so as not to decrease their impact. Hell, I
don't even own them on video. I may get them on DVD though for
posterity.
Oh and there's another film I love - an A Team television movie which
holds the record for the most viewings in the shortest amount of time.
It's simply the best aspects of the A Team crammed into one whole hour
and a half or so. I'm sorry I taped over it.
Mine, too.
Grosse Point Blank
Bladerunner
A Few Good Men
possibly The Matrix, ask me in a few years when the novelty has worn off
I have no idea about sequels, as I don't tend to mentally ringfence them
from other films. Dunno about a fifth film, either.

I'll let that one go because it was blatantly a high-camp invasion film of
the 1950's style, just with good effects.

Apocalypse Now
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Matrix
Batman: The Movie (the original version with Adam West. Not the
terribly-awful 80's/90's revivals)
and, er, whichever slapstick comedy is the one I like most on any given

Highlander.
Yes. It's because the film is so completely over the top, with its
stereotypical characters, corny dialogue and coincidence-ridden plot - yet
it's a total rollercoaster ride from start to finish. As far as I am
concerned, you are simply not meant to the take ID4 at all seriously. It's a
popcorn movie.

No. It is, in the main, excellent. Of course, the scene where Mary Elizabeth
Mastrantonio starts crying like some silly bitch into the microphone is
insipid romanticised shite - but that's two minutes out of 174, so I'm not
complaining...
Shaun.

Now there's a good movie. I have the DVD. It is excellent, yes.
Shaun.
Yes, it is better. Fox should have let Cameron go with that version in the
first place, instead of making him cut it. Like T2 and The Abyss, the
Special Edition makes the original theatrical version unwatchable.
Shaun.
1. Apocalypse Now
2. Aliens
3. The Marathon Man
4. Godfather Trilogy

Yeah, those drone guns, groovy, also like the Evil Dead trilogy.
You like it that much though? Better than all the other movies you could
have picked? Well, each to his own, but... It's not something i could watch
again, and again, and again or anything. But i must admit that it's
stereotypical british flyboys were hilarious,
Flyboy 1 : <twirling moustache> 'What ho, those jolly yanks have found a way
to kill those dashed alien chaps'
Flyboy 2 : <wearing monacle> 'pip pip, well we'll jolly well show those
alien rotters what for once we've finished our tea'
and so on and so on.

Slightly cynical, aren't we?

No. It is one of the worst film franchises of all time. Absolute shite from
start to finish.
> If you'll notice, in 1976, it was none of these things on release.
Yes it was. It relied on special effects which were excellent for the time.
A few years later when it's popularity was waning it was re-cut with new
effects to hide the shallow, boring "plot" for a while in order to pave the
way for new shallow, boring over-produced sequels.
Star Wars is a clone of every western ever made, just set in space.
I have all my fave movies on DVD now. Apart from Little Shop of
Horros (I'm looking for the one with the original ending) and The
Sound of Music is on order, released 28th Aug.
>I have no idea about sequels, as I don't tend to mentally ringfence them

Just thinking about it one of the best (or perhaps most "worthy")
sequal is probably Jurassic Park 2. Not as good as the book, tho.

I liked Aliens Special Edition.
I've never seen Alien3: Special Edition though. I remember it being
released on VHS many moons ago, but the Alien Legacy DVD box set
doesn't contain the Special Edition of Alien3. Which makes me refuse
to buy it. I think the original ending was "re-done" for the
LaserDisc release, but they never released it as the format kinda
died.
The T2 Special Edition (T2000?) is okay, it doesn't build on the plot
much tho, I you can see why the scenes were cut out.

1. Miracle Mile
2. Mad Max
3. Star Wars
4. Terminator 2
5. Full Metal Jacket
Okay, so mine isn't much better, but at least Independence Day isn't
on there. Yes, 'oh no you do not shoot that green shit at me' is a
good line, but it does not a good movie make.
Sequels
1. Aliens

That's all I can think of right now. Sequels = badness.
No.
B-b-b-but that's a sequel, you sly fox you.
Mine. I hate doing this though, I really need a top 100.
Close Encounters
Star Wars
True Romance
Bullet In The Head
The Princess Bride
Sequels-
The Empire Strikes Back
Aliens
Day Of The Dead
Evil Dead 2
Ummm, can't think off the top of my head. . . .
For the DVD release if I remember rightly. I still want Spielberg to cobble
together the definative Close Encounters release it on DVD, mmmmm.
Exactly what I was going to say, Star Wars was far from hyped during it's
original release and succeeded by word of mouth. . .
Or, to be far clearer, the Westerns of John Ford and Howard Hawks
inspired Kurosawa.
Ford had been making Westerns since 1917, when Akira was 7.
Akira made his first film in 1943. Stagecoach was released in 1939.
Akira directly inspired Star Wars (Hidden Fortress), A Fistful of
Dollars (Yojimbo) The Outrage (Rashomon) and The Magnificent Seven
(Seven Samurai).
According to DVD-expert-me-do in work, there is already one release of
Bladerunner on DVD and it's shit. And there's a "Special Edition" which is
£40 or something. Cuss.

In Nikita there's a character called Victor the Cleaner.
You only see him for a couple of minutes, and he's played by

I am a subscriber to alt.fan.blade-runner And I have heard thet there will be
a special edition, but it's not out yet. It will contain deleted scenes,
trailers interviews with cast and crew ect, and possibly the documenty, shown
on channel 4 a few weeks ago. It will not cost anything like £40 though,
unless you import it.
The current release of blade runner on DVD is not shit as such, its just that
it has no extras. Just the film itself.

Sort of, yes. I am an atheist and minister in the Universal Life Church. If
you don't already know about it, to become a minister in their church all
you have to do is ask - there's a form to fill in at www.ulc.org and you get
a nifty certificate to print out. You don't actually have to believe
anything to be a member of their church. So I think I'm a real Reverend, but
others (e.g. the UK government) may disagree.
I just love the idea of a religion where you don't have to believe anything
at all. It's like setting up a political party made up of people who can't
be bothered to vote.
Owen
Bah. Thats no good, is it?
I demand you have cassocks and such things.
Top Five Reasons That I Am Not A Real Dog Collar Type Reverend -
1. Reverends have to either believe in God or be very good at pretending
they do.
2. Sunday mornings are for sleeping, or trying to sleep while nursing a
hangover.
3. You will more than likely be stuck in some crap village in the middle of
nowhere.
4. You get paid nothing and so have to survive on cakes and cucumber
sandwiches made by old ladies who see you as a substitute son now their real
sons have left to get proper jobs in big towns.
5. You have to do christenings, which means BEING PUKED ON BY BABIES.

Independence day had nothing new at all what-so-ever (BLS), Star Wars
was a new twist on a tired story line, boy meets Jedi, Jedi gets killed
by evil Dark lord, boy gets hand sliced off by evil Dark lord, Dark lord
is boys father, boys evil father kills evil Emperor, boy celebrates with
tree swinging midget people.

I hate all the Mad Max's, ID4 sucks so much ass it makes wicky-wicky-
wild-wild-west (or wicky-wicky-walk-walked-out as I call it) look like
Citizen Cane, and as for the Batman movies?? come on...the only good bit
in ANY of the Batman movies is at the end of Batman Forever (is that the
one with Jim Carrey?) where they climb onto the island that Two-face and
the Riddler are hiding and Robin goes
"Holy rusted metal Batman!"
Batman: "what did you say??"
Robin: "this metal, it's all rusted, and holey!"
Batman: "oh"
I just thought that was really funny.

best films in no order at all:

2. Reservois Dogs/Pulp Fiction

But it didn't pretend to. It didn't pretend to have a coherent, sensible
plot, it didn't pretend that it was just an excuse for some hammy acting
and special effects. It was a B-Movie, and it knew it, and that's why it's
good.

your just babbling now, ID4 was over hyped and over rated garbage with
rediculous amounts of money pumped into it's annoyingly crap cast. It's
an easy to watch feel-good movie, but nothing special, I wouldn't rate
it under the "best movie of all time" category. It's a nice movie, but
not a GREAT one. It's like "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", I
like it, but it's not genius.

You see , this is why I hate top 5's. All the films you listed are amongst my
favourites but because I didn't think of them at the time they are not in my top
5 and I went off on a fantasy/ sci-fi/ horror list. Kind of.
I am about to watch BWP again right after I finish up here, a film which I
believe is even better on DVD than the cinema. Top extras as well, not as good
as ' The Thing' though. Gah! that's another favourite I forgot to list. And 'Out
Of Sight'. And. . . . oh, fuck it.

And it features none of the original actors. Except maybe at the
television station at the start, so, that's my argument crushed.
And I forgot one anyway:
Alice by Jan Svankmajer. It's a mixture of stop-motion animation and
live action of the Alice In Wonderland story and it's simply lovely.
And another Top 5: The Top 5 list of movies I haven't seen yet but want
to even though they've been out for years:
Day Of The Dead
Assault On Precinct 13
Spinal Tap
Buckaroo Banzai
Er, The Little Mermaid or something.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, mister. I hate Star Wars; I
don't begrudge other people having it in their top five. It's crap, but
that's my opinion.
Lucas chose Independence Day for his top five. Where's the problem? He
liked the film. I see no problem with that.
I did say that originally...
I can't remember why i started arguing(or 'discussing') this in great
detail...
Oh yeah - i think it was because you were attempting to force the idea that
star wars is crap down my throat (don't bother arguing this point please -
blah blah blah just stating my opinion blah blah blah - i don't care)
Anyway, discussion over from my point of view.

I am well known for my elitist musical and cinema tastes but I'd just like
to say i thought the mummy was one of the best films I say last year (if it
was last year).
I think most people who diss travis do so because they are incredibly,
unbelievably dull. And shit in the extreme. I certainly don't pretend to
"think their earlier work was better".
I have the DVD. It is good, yes.
Shaun.
Well done, miss-the-point man!

But "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" IS genius.
It has everything, man - chocolate, a dancing grandfather, a bizarre
factory owner with an excellent outfit, fat midgets that sing annoyingly
catchy tunes, bloated purple children...
I watched it recently on telly and I had forgotten quite how disturbing Gene
Wilder is in it. A fucking brilliant performance.
This makes me laugh.
Violent Cop instead.

Top Five? Citizen Kane / Godfather / Seven Samurai type elite?
Yes. He's brilliant in it. Maybe it's just me but i didn't really grasp how
much of a psycho Wonka is until i grew older... But then, maybe it's just
me.

That was one of the films that scared the crap out of me as a child. Ahh.
Memories. That scene in the tunnel where the image of a chicken getting its
head lopped off can be seen is good old fashioned nightmare fuel.

sad really, Roald Dahl was a genius and I loved his books (the Twits
being a strong favourite just behind George's Marvelous Medicine <if
that is the REAL title>) Quentin Blakes drawings were cool too.
in fact, I liked Witches aswell, and, oh, what else??? James and the
Giant peach was cool....I haven't and dont want to see the film.....
what else did he write??
not the greatest site in the world, in fact, the background is annoying
and the pictures are all broken links, but, it gives a list of books. I
had forgotten about "The magic finger" I mean, how did I manage to
forget that?? It's another GREAT book, The BFG....christ......Matilda,
this guy is the greatest.
As far as I'm concerned you can shove you're JK Rowling books where they
belong, Dahl is the greatest childrens author of all time.

Esio Trot, his final book was good. Sadly he died before he finished it.
Excellently, Quentin Blake finished it for him and took no credit in the
book for doing so.
