The Devil's Advocate©

I'm looking for book recommendations on 2 topics:

1) Typography, covering thing such as proper uses of kerning, leading,
sans vs. sans-serif, point sizes, justification, history of typefaces,
methodology, etc.

2) Logo/identity development. This is my weakest skill in graphic
design. I want to develop myself in this arena. Anything that would
give good advice on the process of developing a visual identity. I
also would like to find a catalogue of some of the best designed logos
of all time.

The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst covers all of
these things and more.

For what concern Typography I really appreciated this book:

Working with Computer Type 4 Experimental Typography by Rob Carter -
RotoVision
ISBN 88-87711-04-6

It helps you understand typographic rules and how to break them creatively.

I hope it can help you.

cheers

her Non-Designer's Design Book and Non-Designer's Type Book are both good,
too.

LogoPower (don't have the book here so can't recall the author) was a good
book at the basics of logo work and corporate identity. Logo Design That
Works by Lisa Silver is kind of interesting, too.

type and typography by. andrew haslan and someone else.. but thats the title
and its on amazon.
i have found it very good. mostly factual, but also includes some historical
stuff

it has been a very good grounding, basic enough for a relative beginner but
advanced enough otherwise. in no way patronising. well and simply laid out.
i have not regretted it

The seriously big problem I have with Robin Williams' books is that they are
horrifically printed.
Her Non-Designers Typography book might be the most god awful example of
wretched printing for a typographic book I've yet laid eyes on. wait.. no.. its
official.... it is THE worst.
Nothing like great gobs of ink on coated stock to fill in all those lovely
counters.
PLUS..
she does a great disservice to classic faces IMO by failing to relate WHY they
were devised in the first place (context IS the message) AND she has a habit of
extolling the current hot 'display face' for a proper one. Which wouldn't be so
bad if the 'hot display face' weren't so hot nowadays. It's an older book.

Good for generalized typographic use, bad in general.
Worth the money at a cheap second hand book store.
