Need graphic designer

I am a web developer but my designs aren't great as you can see by looking
at the visual on the current site.
What I want is someone to redesign it in a modern look. The only thing is, I
cant pay as this is a 0 budget site I am building in my spare time.. but it
is likely to take of in a big way as I have had interest from the caraudio
industry.
I any one would like to design the site, it would be a good opportunity to
show off your skills :)

Most people here have their own site, which I'm sure you'll agree is a
better place to show off their skills ;-)

This is the most repeated sentence I've heard from people looking for
designers in this group and it is really getting old fast.
Here's what you do... find a design firm that has just opened its doors
(presumably looking for clients) in your city and walk through the doors
with your request. When you have done that come back here and tell me what
they said.

P.S. This experiment can be done with any starting business seeing as they
all want "exposure" more than cash. So you can also try car dealerships,
grocery stores, vacation spots, etc.

As for why I am doing it? personal hobby, as a portfolio of my skills.
Also.. before I get an sponsorship and therefore money from the site, I
need something to show the interested parties. The initial design is just
for the front end. When the money starts coming in, I am more than happy to
pay for future development.
I know its not good for the wallet in the short term.. but will be in the
long term.
As for personal pages.. Every time the web dev company I worked for wanted a
new design, the first thing they did was check out their client pages..
This would be a good opportunity for people starting out in design.

I have already had 6 people offer their services and some of these people
are damn good :)
As always the cloud has a silver lining.. if you know how to extract it.
The caraudio site is a personal site that will pay in the future. Benefits
will be passed on to everyone that made it possible.
Also.. I am a web developer.. I may not be able to pay for my personal
design.. but my clients can. Since my designs aren't great, I have to use
graphic designers to provide the artwork.
Everyone wins in the end

Somehow, I find that hard to believe. But, as you say, you had 6 people respond
and "some" of these people are damn good. I am curious as to an actual "number"
instead of the word "some".

Whose business model are you using? It would be more like "Everyone gets it in the

Yes you are lucky but your opinion is also skewed. You want something for
nothing and you're apparently getting just what you want which makes it easy
to justify. Of course with free work there is also the lack of contracts and
agreements and these type of deals often carry the burden of
misunderstandings and complications. If your luck holds out you'll pick a
designer you like and the project will go through to completion without a
hitch but if your not lucky you will learn a lesson that you won't soon
forget.
You will soon find that not paying a designer means it is much harder to ask
for corrections, additional modifications or expansions of the project's
parameters. A person's patience can easily wear thin when after the 30th
request to change something has come through and no money or recognition has
yet to be seen. You get what you pay for.
I still strongly believe that these type of lessons are best learned through
trial and error but I can tell you I'm honestly sick to death of people
coming into this newsgroup, as you have, asking for free work. You show
little respect for our industry by making such requests and preying on those
who feel that recognition is more important than getting paid for their
talent.
Note to designers who feel that free work for recognition is a fair trade;
when was the last time a graphic designer became a household name for free
work, let alone paid work? The average designer, firm or studio succeeds in
anonymity in today's market which means that efforts are normally made
through alternative methods other than pro bono work for every Joe who needs
free work.

designs, I do NOT do this by request. That is the best way to take all the fun
and love of creating right out of a person! People that don't pay you expect to
tell you how they want things done, and done over, just as if they were paying
you! My advice is to never accept an offer to do free work for anyone! EVER!
