I've written several short stories and I'm planning on turning them
into graphic novels. Therefore, I'm seeking collaboration with graphic
artist(s) who are interested in this project.
Although my stories are set in Japan, where I'm currently living, I'm
not looking for a manga-style of drawing. I would be interested in
collaborating with artists closer to Bernie Wrightson's style or Dave
McKean's style.
My stories are influenced by 70's Japanese exploitation movies, 70's
and early 80's horror movies, as well as Italian fumetti and gialli.
Hope to hear about you soon
Larry
You know you might consider actually, oh I don't know...posting some
of your ~actual~ work for people to read. Then again you seem to be
searching blind for a designer, so maybe you're looking for someone as
equally clueless. *shrugs*
If you're ~really~ serious about such a project the first thing you
ought to do...I mean AFTER actually writing out some of yer stories
and such for people to read, is to COMISSION some different artists,
like on DeviantArt, Fur Affinity, etc to make some mockups and
character designs that you can use to present with your story ideas in
order to try and get people interested.
If you're looking purely for free/volunteer work...yeah, don't count
on it. Most artists have enough creative writing skills that they
don't need to bother adopting an over the shoulder art director like
yourself. And even if you do manage to find someone, expect all your
ideas to take a back seat to THEIR ideas on how the story should go.
Ultimately, if you're ~really~ serious about it then you can expect to
do either one of two things...learn how to do the art yourself (it
isn't all *THAT* difficult), or commission all the work out. Might be
a lil expensive, but you'll be able to get exactly what you want.
The second route is actually what I'm doing with this video game I'm
working on called Fourth Space. I've commissioned more than a dozen
high profile artists within the community that the game is directed to
and I've gotten them to make a variety of cut scene images for the
game. Granted I could have done the artwork myself, I think it makes
the game more interesting to have a whole variety of different artists
and art styles. You could consider doing something similar with your
graphic novel.
If you decide to do it yourself and you want to do it the fastest way
possible, then get the 3D rendering program Poser. Poser (not just a
clever name) comes with a whole variety of basic human model forms
which can easily be posed in any manner you like, in fact the program
itself comes with dozens upon dozens of preset poses that you can use
on the models. Once you've got your models setup and posed the way
you like them, the program has a variety of output rendering methods,
including outline, shadow, flat and other styles. You can then take
those basic forms and use them as the basis for your drawings, either
tracing over them, or using them directly and simply digitally
painting on top of them , essentially giving you a model to work with
that has absolutely perfect anatomy. Further, you can use the
outputted shadow render and layer blend it onto your work to get
highly realistic shading effects. You can even go further with the 3D
modeling end and build or import clothing meshes, which will help you
get even more accurate shading.
As far as digital painting there are a whole variety of tutorials,
styles and forms out there, Getty's being my current favorite:

http://www.backwater-productions.net/_images/_Muses/Getty_Tutorial_-_How_To_Soft_Cell_Shade.png
Anyway, as I said, if you're serious about it, there are ways to get
the job done...but don't expect it to be easy...or free for that
matter. After all, if it really was that easy, or free...well,
everyone would be doing it. ^__^

Yeah, sure, and even though I'm currently in the process of
copyrighting the stories (I'm waiting for the confirmation mail from
the library of congress copyright office), if I put things online, by
the time I finish this mail my work will have been stolen by X people,
put on X websites without my authorization, and I will have no more
need trying to find a collaborator.
Another great idea?

I have already written the stories, or else I wouldn't be looking for

Already tried DeviantArt. Only answer was "you should try somewhere
else, artists here are into the manga style"

You should buy a dictionary and check the meaning of the word
"collaboration".

Yeah, sure. Everybody knows that's how things go at Marvel, DC and
such: writers are useless. That's why they have so many writers in
their staff. They enjoy wasting money paying useless people.

Once again, you should check what "collaboration" means.
OK, I'll by kind enough to copy/paste it:
1. To work together, especially in a joint intellectual effort.
See, it isn't that difficult: working - together - ...mmm...maybe I
should also copy the definition of "together"...

Copyright is inherent...also you can register TRADEMARKS...but you
don't really "register" copyright...you don't need to. Further, most
works are usually derivative of ~something~, it's very asinine to
think that your ideas are truly original. True originality just
doesn't exist, everything is based upon SOMETHING. Further, it really
doesn't matter if someone "steals" your work, there are *ALWAYS* going
to be fake artists and copy cats...they are inconsequential at best
though and unless they are specifically profiting off of the ideas you
really can't do anything about them at all as they are protected under
fair use laws. This is how you can make "fan art" and so forth of
your favorite mainstream media forms and the copyright holders of
those forms can't actually do anything about it since no profit is
being made off the works, nor is their ability to make money off the
works being hindered.

And why would a potential "collaborator" want to work with you when
they don't know anything at all about you or your work? No offense,
but you really do sound like a 12 year old just pissing in the wind
here.

...I think you misunderstood. What I mean was you should browse
through DeviantArt, there are quite literarily MILLIONS of artist on
there...and you can actually see their work. Once you find an artist
whose style you like you can then contact them about commission work
and see how much they would charge for some mockups and so forth.

You should probably visit this site and read through it:
http://www.no-spec.com/
...VERY carefully...preferably before you wind up making a complete
idiot of yourself here.
That is what you're looking for, spec work...and I think you'll find
that most professional artist are very much opposed to it. As I said,
either you can PAY for the WORK you want done on YOUR project...or you
can do the work yourself. Anything beyond that is just the wishful
thinking of a twelve year old who obviously knows nothing of this
industry or how it all works.
>> And even if you do manage to find someone, expect all your
>> ideas to take a back seat to THEIR ideas on how the story should go.
>Yeah, sure. Everybody knows that's how things go at Marvel, DC and
>such: writers are useless. That's why they have so many writers in

So you think that writers should be paid but that graphic
artists/designers should not? You are proposing that someone do work
for you for free on the PROMISE of POTENTIALLY making money off the
works. To quote from a recent post from NotMe:
: Might check out www.no-spec.com for the reality of " I unfortunately cannot
: offer you any salary for the moment. Only
: things I can guarantee you (by contract) is to pay you retroactively
: if I can secure a budget. "
:
: Spec work has a documented ROI (return on investment) of ~1%. By comparison,
: the slots in Vegas have a ROI of 3-5%
That is the reality here and why you're likely not going to find
anyone who wants to "collaborate" with you...especially given the fact
that no one knows who you are or what your track record is as far as
published works. Just how many graphic novels have you published
before? What was the return investment on those projects? What is it
about your work that would entice a graphic designer to WANT to
"collaborate" with you? Have you had ANYTHING published? Have you
even gone to college and gotten a degree in writing/English? Where's
your resume/portfolio?
To be as blunt as possible the *ONLY* way you're going to get somebody
to work with you for nothing is if:
A. They have no talent themselves...at all (ie another 12 year old).
or
B. You have the resume, the portfolio, the professional and/or
artistic standing to even BE in a position to be asking for free work.
I mean if Joss Whedon comes up to you and says he'd like to
collaborate with you on a project, well no shit you'd jump at the
chance, I mean even if it failed completely just imagine how awesome
*THAT* would look on your portfolio/resume! Basically, unless you're
at least ~semi~ famous in your own right...you're not gonna get people
lining up to "collaborate" with you...unless you plan on paying them.
*I* often get people who want to "collaborate" with me on a variety of
projects I have going, but that's because they know how awesome my
work is and they want to be apart of that. For example if I wanted to
find "collaborators" to help me out on my sprite generator...
http://www.backwater-productions.net/RMXP_CSG/
...oh yeah, not gonna be very hard to find lots of people who want to
be apart of that project (in fact I got three who have been actively
e-mailing me wanting to come on board). But that's because they can
*SEE* what the project actually looks like and they can *SEE* the
potential of it. If I was just going around like you are and mouthing
off about how I'm looking for a "collaborator" to help me build a
sprite generator without having ANYTHING to show for the project at
all...yeah...nobody's gonna care, nobody. *shrugs*
