here are two I've finished, one I hurried through in about two hours and it's
obvious, heh.

I'm going to try a portrait next... if it doesn't come out, I'll claim Picasso
as my influence.

anyone else love Georgia O'Keeffe?

wow. impressive Gem. I love the colors in 'fiery flowers' -- the whole
canvas has warm glow to it.

You bet! One of my favorite painters. I don't know if I'd put these in a
Georgia O'Keeffe genre, though. You'd need to focus more on the flowers in
close-up. I love that her paintings were so influenced by photography and
used "extreme close-ups" and detail to visualize things that had never been
seen before.

Oh no, no, not at all! My apologies, I meant that comment as an afterthought.
:)
jeez, mine aren't anything like her work. [!!]

I was studying some of her work last night and happened upon some of her
landscapes and crosses. So remarkable for the simplicity and impact! Also, I
gave her flowersand landscapes closer scrutiny. Interesting how she combines
the human form with more earthy forms ie: landscapes where the folds of the
hills resemble a body in repose. Lovely work.

Exactly. Such a wonderful new angle on familiar objects and places.

*sigh*

thanks, cpg! :)
Yes, that background came out very nice, I felt. Soft wide brush and about four
colors, dark to light. Blend dry with short seesaw strokes.

>looks like fun

it is!! It's great! I could do this all day long!
[of course, that could be the fumes of oils in a confined space... but I like
that smell...lol]
have you had time to work in your oils again lately?

I've never done oils actually. I've played with acrylics a couple
times lately. I received the highest praise ever when my two year-old
insisted on hanging one of them in his room, right next to a painting
he did. ;-)

Delightful, Gem, thanks for sharing.

I like "Fiery Flowers." It has passion and drama. I think it needs a touch
more highlighting on the right, to keep the image from being swallowed by
the background, although that might just be a limitation of the jpeg and
monitor.

The technique on books and lamp is good, but you've accidentally framed
negative space. Stuff something in there!

Thanks, Tony! Glad you liked it. I found that it's easier for me to paint in
our crowded painting class at school than at home.... less distractions, hehe.

Our children see us in our very best light, don't they, at that age. If only it
could/would last through the teens...

You should give the oils a shot.

I really like the lighting on the flowers. Are you into Caravaggio? He's one
of my favorites.

I like her Cow Sculls!

I love oils but haven't had the time & space until recently so I was
thrilled when my current painting class was in oils rather than acrylic
*yippee!* . Love your work and hope to have some new pieces soon to share
The only thing that makes it hard to work at home is "when are you going to
be done with the 'art sh*t' and get into the more useful classes? (meaning
bus.ad stuff I guess)." I keep having to explain what working towards a
B.F.A. means while trying to finish the latest ad work that pays my bills.
:)

I just checked out some work by Caravaggio. WOW. Fantastic. Fascinating how
little color and paint is sometimes used to produce the human form or face.
Lovely work.

me too! more than the flowers. I really love her crosses and mountains. One
favorite:

Yes, me too. Oils are different and produce richer results, imo, although
acrylics can get that glossy look going. oh yeah, and then there's clean-up....
but actually, my oils clean up pretty good with dish soap and water.

> Love your work and hope to have some new pieces soon to share

Thanks very much, and please post some of yours soon! How do you feel about
still life compared to landscapes or abstracts? Who are some of your
influences?
Do you like to work in watercolor?

>work at home is "when are you going to

LOL! That's funny! Mine is the opposite. I have an arty family and they cringe
at the biz classes, [heh, so do I] ;)

Thanks, for looking, Carolyn and good luck in school!

To look at - I like them all, but I love portrait work and tend to blend
fantasy/sci-fi type images for landscapes and the romantics for portraiture
(something like Canty mixed with Waterhouse and Rossetti).

> Do you like to work in watercolor?

Not as much but I usually use watercolors for light washes over pen & ink
which gives my prof fits in class..."saturate your colors!" It's just not
something I'm used to but I suppose I'll learn to deal with it. :)

And his life was insane, I think he was the original rock & roll bad boy. He
was an out of control bi-sexual drunk with a wild temper. Hung out with all
the princes, dukes and jet setters of that time. He even got into a street
fight once and killed someone (in self defense) went into hiding, all this
crazy stuff. In the 1500's with all that religious reform stuff going on,
its pretty amazing. And throughout all that insanity he produced the most
amazing artwork. Yeah Caravaggio's cool. But I don't recommend you get real
drunk and have a street fight, ok?
