thanks

It seems there *is* no demo.
from:
ainter.htm>
'In 1999, MetaCreations divested itself of most of its graphics
products, including Painter, Painter Classic, and Painter 3D.
All products were since purchased by Corel.'
Painter comes in two flavours:
- Painter Classic, which basically is a kind of 'Painter Light'. This
has officially been discontinued since april 2000, but strangely enough
I still got it delivered with my Wacom Graphire tablet way after that.
Don't know if they still do that.
- Painter 6, the 'pro' version:

Corel/GetToKnow/Index>
If you happen to run across a pre-6 verion of Painter, don't buy it,
unless it's dirt cheap. It had an interface from hell, and in Painter 6
they completely reworked it to make it much more in line with Photoshop
and such.

Hey, thanks for confirming that. It was pretty much the answer I was coming
up with.
If you can't find a demo of Painter, try Deep Paint instead. It crashed my
system a few times and I had to get rid of it. But a lot of people like it.

Deep Paint put a horrible "E-Licence Control" "drive" on my pc, that is in
xplorer, I cant get it away without messing up Deep Paint :(
I hate silly programmers like that...
dunno about a demo, but Painter Classic comes bundled with most Wacom
tablets.

Definitely a point. It does depend what you're used to. Several people I
know who work with Painter were used to the logic behind layers &
selections in PS - myself included - and they all had great problems
with Painter before version 6. Despite several attempts and a manual I
just could not get understand how all those droppers, movers and
floaters were really supposed to be manipulated.
Yet... I still maintain there was some seriously faulty thinking behind
the design of the interface :-)

And I forgot to mention that the Deep Paint people kept blaming me for my
system crashes -- they were of no help. Funny how my system worked fine
before I installed their program, my system worked fine when I used any
other program without Deep Paint, and my system has worked fine after I
uninstalled Deep Paint. Hmmmmm.....funny how that works.

Carol - I had the same problem with Deep Paint, it screwed my comp up
completely. That's why I thought I'd try Painter.
