My Son apparently has some skills in Graphic arts. We posted a few of his
drawings to various hobby news-groups and now a commercial concern is
offering to buy one of them. This is an entirely new frontier for us and I
would like to ask if there is a site that may help us determine value
(abstract, I know) and learn the various legal aspects of the Free-Lance
Graphic Arts business.
Thanks in advance
Roger
You may also want to get a copy of the GAG Pricing Guide. It has many
contract samples in it. You should be able to get it through any major
bookseller, or on-line through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

There are numerous published resources in regards to pricing, legal
issues and the business of graphic design. Some of the best books
include:
• Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing and Ethical Guidelines
• AIGA Professional Practices in Graphic Design
• The Streetwise Guide to Freelance Design and Illustration
• Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market: 2500 places to Sell Your Art &
Design
• The Business of Graphic Design, by Ed Gold
• The Business Side of Creativity, by Cameron Foote
• Selling Graphic Design, by Don Sparkman
• Business and Legal Forms for Graphic Designers, by Tad Crawford and
Eva Doman Bruck
Most can be found at major bookstores or through online booksellers
like amazon.com.
Good luck - Jeff

A few things to be careful about (these will be in the books, but in case
you get overwhelmed, these issues are REALLY important):
1. Is this a one-time use (like for a fundraising or promotional drive) or
is the company offering to buy the rights to use the drawing many times over
(as maybe a logo or corporate image)?
2. Are they offering to buy the copyright? Is the drawing copyrighted? If
not, and you need info on copyrights, visit this website:
http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/ It's the US Copyright Office. There is
also information and links to foreign concerns as well, if you're not here
in the US.
3. What are the payment arrangements? Are they offering money, or are
they offering a trade of goods?
4. Most importantly: DON'T do anything until you have a firm offer IN
WRITING -- not an e-mail, but an actual signed letter.
Good luck to you,
Carol

Carol offered some excellent resources and advice. Another great
source of information is the About.com Graphic Design site at:
http://graphicdesign.about.com/mbody.htm?once=true&
By using the search engine for the site you will find information on
pricing, sample contracts, general graphic design business practices
and much more.
Good luck! - Jeff
how old is your son?
offhand, i mean, if he's a KID, with no training, the GAG numbers are
prehaps a bit high.
