I decided to take this time to learn how to use my new program Painter 5.5.
I just wanted me, some digital paint, and a blank canvas. I soon found that
what I really wanted a graphics tablet, but was still able to get a somewhat
satifactory output from my brain's input. ; ) But the mouse was a
limitation, as was my lack of painting experience. Some days took 15
minutes, while a few allowed a little over an hour.
All in all, I enjoyed the exercise, and thought it was worth while, and I
learned a lot more about Painter, painting, and graphics tablets (through
some studying on various tablet websites on the net). It was fun. Isn't that
what art is all about?
I have more observations on the site, but I won't bore you any further.

Brian, that is wonderful work. Wow. There's a wonderful mood to your work.
For some reason, "Ink Blot" jumped out at me... but then again, I tend to
like high contrast work. It has good energy, though. "Last Days" and "Last
Summer" are also good.

Sheesh, with stuff like this up, I almost feel like it'd be embarrasing to post my
work. I've really used this exercise as a learning time. I've gone from being
terrible at drawing figures, to having rather good action drawing skills. I'm
drawing poses where I didn't used to be able to.
And yet, it still pales in comparison to what you've done. Would somebody please say
something encouraging, so I'll get the nerve to post my work, and not have wasted the
last 12 days... :)

Remember that this is an exercise and not a competition. If you gained
from it, you should post as that's part of the process. Believe me, I'm
not happy with several of mine.

I feel very much the same way about mine. At times I feel like I will post
the work, but with my eyes closed, and I won't check the newsgroup for the
next week afterwards! But this is an event, an exercise -- not a contest.
Every one of us approached this differently, and there is no right or wrong,
good or bad. There is only art. Post your work, because we want to see it.

Hey, I want to see your work, as well as the rest of us. You've got a good
eye. I really liked the lighting and atmosphere in that Terregan (Is that
the spelling?) image that you posted a while back.
A great thing about this exercise is that you will probably learn from it,
and probably get better. I know I learned from it.

It's Terragen, but close enough. :) The thing is, I decided against using that for
this 14 days exercise, because it would take the greater part of my day to produce an
entire scene in one day. I've been putting my sketchbook to good use instead. :)

Thanks for the encouragement all. I'll get my work so far scanned in today and put
them up on my webspace.
Debbie
My favorites are #8 The Last Days and #13 The Keeper of the Sun. Think of
these in spacious rooms at four to five feet wide -- cool, huh?
Continued success with your art.

Thanks for the kind words. You and Gem came up with a good idea when you
thought of this 14 day thing. It should be fun seeing the results of a large
sampling of artists...

I liked "Anxious" and "Shoreline Shadows" very much. Like Tor, "Ink Spot" kept
me coming back for a repeat look. Will you try to repeat any of these on a
canvas?
So happy that you enjoyed the experience and got so much out of it. Enjoyed
your observations and views concerning this exercise very much. Thanks!
Please do not destroy anything but keep it for future reference. After <if> you
do this a few more times, it will prove invaluable in helping you to chart your
progress.
Brian, you have the soul of an artist.

Art is fun!
What I really love about this 14 Days exercise is that it forces a
sort of artistic honesty. You do it, it's done and it is what it is.
No apologies, no explanations, no revisions. What a breath of fresh
air compared to what most of us usually do with our work.
cpg
As for putting any of these on canvas, probably not in the near future,
although I'd probably enjoy it quite a bit. I've never really had much
experience with "real" paints, so that means I also haven't yet invested in
brushes, paint, and the other pricey stuff that goes along with it. Not
really pricey once you've got the stuff, but...
Anyways, thanks for the kind words...

I agree. No restrictions either. I enjoy not being restricted by canvas
dimensions, color, theme, mood, texture.... It's refreshing.

Just do it dude. Can't hurt. Show us your Ballz!

And tablets are nice, but if you hadn't mentioned you were using a
mouse, I wouldn't have known.
Thanks for sharing you work.
Claire
The tablet is the mouse-pen (called a stylus) that works with
a....hmmm....tablet-looking-thing. Go to www.wacom.com and see what they
have -- there's a nice one for around $100 -- maybe the same one you saw.

Did you sit this one out? If so, maybe next time you'll give it a go. :)

how's the little one?
Something to think about, though, yes? :)

You are welcome.

It sounded like lots fun but I did choose to sit this one out. I
actually played a little with Painter today over lunch. Pretty fun but
a little frustrating for someone who cut his teeth on Photoshop. It'll
take some getting used to.
>how's the little one?
Payton is doing pretty well though he does have a cold right now. His
Mom just went back to work so I'm trying to pick up some slack for
her. Crazy days but very satisfying. Thanks for asking ;-)

I was just about to write absolutely the same when I read all of it in
Dan's post. Ditto to every single word, incl. my favourite ones, incl.
imagining them at wall size :)
Brian, it may be a matter of personal preference, but I really love
those color schemes of yours that are both soft and powerful at the
same time.
BTW, would you allow me to poke my nose into your thrash can from time
to time? :))) I'd expect to find some quite interesting 'garbage'
there... ;)
