I was curious and thought I would come here for an answer.

I see alot of 'Graphic Designers' on the web, and alot of 'Digital Artists' and
I was wondering what was the difference between them.

I was interested in getting into online art, but did not know which was the
proper title to use.

I see alot of people using the title 'Graphic Designer', more than 'Digital
Artist'.

So, could someone help enlighten me please?

Thank you.

Digital artist is an illustrator or painter. A graphic designer may be neither of
these. A graphic designer designs things like magazines and is responsible for its
overall appearance, while the illustrator may have just drawn an illustration for
the cover and had nothing to do with with the magazine's general appearance. A
simple distinction, but easily understood.

I think it is usually a matter of focus or speciality. A designer skilled
in traditional media can choose to focus on digital design to meet that
market, or a designer who has developed his/her skill on software
applications alone, may be considered specificaly a digital artist. You can
check out my web-site, it is totally non-commercial, and look at two
different listings, one in traditional media, and one that is primarily
digital. If I am seeking the attention of entities requiring digital art,
then I am a digital artist.

BUT - what if I design my own website, like many, many others....

And someone likes it and wants me to design 'their' website....

Am I a 'Graphic Designer' like so very many others that do this?

Or - do I have to attend formal schooling, and get certification....

Sorry - still confused...

Anyone who wants, can call themselves a graphic designer. It not a title like Dr,
or Ph.D., etc... I went to school three years an took a graphic design coarse,
and got a diploma. Am I a graphic designer ? I'm working on it. The thing is if
you are designing any form of media (web, print, multi, etc...) and you get paid
for it, then I guess you can say you are a Graphic Desiner. (even if the stuff
you produce isn't any good.) Remember the word to remember is "DESIGN" Digital
Artist is a term some use. For me it means someone who uses the computer the same
way as other artist use a Brush. Sometimes I am a Digital Artist when I create
and manipulate images with Photoshop and Painter. There are many types of Graphic
Designers. some are general where they can do a little of everything (or
sometimes a lot) Some are more specific (Illustrators, Painters, Web, Digital
Artist,) Also remember that there are many areas of "Graphic Design" Everything
from Magazine Design - Packaging - Sign Dessign-etc. If you are really talented,
enjoy what you do, and make money don't worry what you call yourself. Pick
something that reflects the type of work you do. If you are doing computer
generated art for the internet, make something up. Call yourself a "Online
Digital Artist" I myself have called myself either a graphic designer or graphic
artist on bus cards.

Hope that helps
DAM

P.S. Don't worry you won't get in any trouble calling yourself a "Graphic
Designer" (although you may get some mean looks if you present unprofessional
work to an experienced Graphic Designer and the call yourself a Designer.) If you
are really interested in the field, take a course. Even if you are really
talented you may be surprised on how much you can learn, or at least understand
the principle behind what you are already doing is good or bad.
