I'm not ~entirely~ set on the audio icon and I may decide to make/find
two icons, one for wav files and one for mp3s.
I'm also considering these as alternatives to the txt and video icons:

*Hatter Addicts need not reply, I already know yer a bunch of retards,
thanks.
I'm also thinkin I might do some uber custom icons, like have some
files were the individual files themselves have their own unique icon.
Right now these changes are just in the image directory and its sub
directories. Here's a folder that has a good variety of file types:

Your icons have different sizes. That messes with the text alignment.
The directory icon looks like an accordion (and something tells me it
was not designed for a light-grey background).

The size part i haven't checked out, but re: the folder icon... looks ok
but maybe as Veronica says you should check it out on a grey background.

Actually I like that, it creates a sorta natural separations between
file types that you can see without even having to look at the icon at
all. Further I'm actually semi-planning to have the whole thing setup
to auto-sort first by type, then alphabetically, at which point it
really won't matter either way.
>The directory icon looks like an accordion (and something tells me it

Well, I'm not sure what an accordion looks like in your reality, but
it sure the hell doesn't look like a file folder to me. Just out of
curiosity, just what res and what color resolution is your system
setup? I only ask because your own site looks like some long lost
remnant of pre VGA monitors...and most of those icons are 32bit alpha
transparency layered PNG files.
Also...light-gray background?
Oh...wait, LOL, sorry, I didn't realize people were still using
IE...or at least I figured most all IE users would have upgraded to 8
by now...actually now that I think about it I think even IE 7 supports
alpha transparencies...*shrugs*...well, regardless, I'm not really too
concerned with how it looks for the Amish of the Internet. If you
want to live the "simple life" of computer technology, that's fine,
but don't go gettin all snitty and indignant when *YOUR* choice to
lead that lifestyle means having to see an inferior, downgraded
version of the reality that the rest of us, who aren't living in 1996,
can't even tell exists. *nods*
The colour difference between your icons does that even better. The size
differences resulting in badly aligned text just makes it look sloppy
(like the result of a quick search for clipart).

I asked my mother. She couldn't tell what it was until I told her (she
had no problem recognizing the equivalent icon on my homepage). She
plays the accordion and she agrees with me that it looks more like an
accordion than a directory icon.

It's not exactly 1280x1024, but not far from it (adjusted slightly to
get square pixels). The colour resolution... um... I don't know exactly
but it's much more than 256.

It is quite possible that whoever designed those icons used something
like that. I just wanted something that looked better on my pages with
dark blue background and yellow text than the default used by the
server.
> Also...light-gray background?
The background of the page is grey. I haven't checked if that is because
you set it to grey or because the page doesn't set any colour, but I did
set my browser to use light grey as default.

IE... um... I installed that once... just to take a look and see what it
did to my homepage... but IE on unix just felt Wrong somehow...

I sent an e-mail to my dad (he's 65) and asked him if he could tell me

Well it should appear just fine then, might have something to do with
how far away your monitor is and or how good your vision is. My
monitor is right up close to my face so it very clearly looks like a
folder to me, quite unmistakable as anything else. If you really
~want~ an according though I do have accordion icons:

My icon library currently spans over 23,000 image forms, drawing from
a multitude of sources including hundreds of different video games,
computer icons, smilies, sized images, vector constructs, etc, etc.
...it's uh...it's not completely sorted as of yet though, I'm still
workin on that part. I have been making some progress though...

I currently have 22 different categories that I'm sorting them out
into, although I keep having to make new, sub categories as I start
filling up my preset image layers.

It shouldn't make any difference then, as I said, they're alpha
transparent PNG files, which means they specifically work on *ANY*
kind of background, regardless of color, gradient, animation effects,
etc. FireFox and IE I believe both default to your system colors,
which should be set to using white as a background, the purpose is
that it sets the highest level of contrast from what the main text is
set at, white, which in turn provides the highest level of readability
with the lowest level of eye strain. Also why you don't ever use two
high contrast colors together for text and background (like red and
yellow, yellow and white, etc) or contrariwise, although not as bad,
two low contrast colors, such as green on blue...keep in mind though
that color theory doesn't take into account saturation and lightness,
which also play contributing factors.
Anyway, if yer system is set to use white and it looks gray, it could
possibly be because your monitor isn't very good, or it's not using
the right drivers, or driver settings, or possibly the monitor
settings itself are off. My monitor is specifically setup for use in
graphic design, so white for me is *REALLY* bright white, as is
everything else, which is important because it can reveal a lot of
graphical anomalies that you might not see otherwise on a standard
monitor setup, which may have more importance in that said anomalies
can affect the overall file size, especially with palette based
images.
That should be "black" actually, not "white", my bad.
The ergonomics people say you should not have the monitor that close to
your face. I never managed to keep the recommended arm's length distance
(or 70 cm or something like that, I don't remember exactly), but with a
big monitor it would get uncomfortable sitting too close too...

I asked my mother if she wants some accordion icons and she said "yes
please, that's exactly what I've been looking for" (apparently some
other accordion player has been criticising all the accordion icons
she's suggested to him for some project). :-)
The transparent pixels are transparent. That's not what I meant by my
comment about the background colour.
> which means they specifically work on *ANY*

I look at the blue folder/accordion picture and just get the feeling
that this icon was meant to be used on a black background.

"should be"? That's just your opinion. Other people might prefer
something else. That's why there are settings for that kind of stuff.

The highes level of contrast to black is yellow, not white. The two
colours that have the highest level of contrast of all is green and
white.

Bright white on a computer monitor can be more straining on one's eyes
than a darker colour (no, I don't know if this is scientific fact or
just subjective opinion, but I have come across many people who agree
with this).

On my monitor white looks white, and grey looks grey.

This is a monitor that a computer nerd type of person gave me when he
bought a new, flat monitor for himself. On the front is printed:
"HITACHI CM769ET SUPER HIGH CONTRAST". Not sure if that has any
significant meaning, but it is bigger and clearer and just generally
better than the ancient piece of rubbish I had before.
> or it's not using

The light grey background as default for pages that don't specify any
colours is not a mistake. I set it that way.

Graphic design is not a high priority for me. I'm an engineer, not an
artist.
