Any know why they do it? Don't think there's any cost to them but it sure
makes it a hassle to DVR the OTA stuff.
Thinkinh of dogging their customer sevice about it since they've dropped
NatGeo.

That's not entirely true. In most markets if Dish does not carry a
local station at all ("main" station or "substations") you will NOT get
listing for that station. I subscribe to my locals but I have five OTA
locals that only show the call letters in the EPG for all time slots.
For the "substations" of most stations you will get listing for them (at
least in my market we do).

Actually when I say Off-the-Air I mean off a TV antenna, not the Dish feed
of local channels. I have no need to get them from Dish.
That is also what I mean. VIP receivers with the OTA module incorporate
the local OTA listings with the satellite listings in the EPG.
How are you able to determine whether there is or is not a cost to DISH?
Do you have access to the contract between DISH and Tribune and know
they don't pay per sub, based on how much info that sub receives?
I know I'm a serious tightwad, but the convenience of being able to just
select a guide entry and create a Timer for all New episodes of that
show on that channel is worth $5/month to me. The more the hassle it
is, the more likely someone is to say "it's only $5". Even if you
record the OTA channels, also getting them via sat allows a more.
Even when you pay the $5, you may and may not see guide info for the OTA
channels. As John said, if that channel isn't carried by DISH via sat,
you shouldn't expect to have guide data for it. For SUB-channels, it is
a crap shoot in each DMA. Lots of Digital Service guide entries, even
when you pay the $5. I get Guide info for both SF and Sacramento
channels, but not everything will have guide info. Those aren't based
on which locals I receive via sat, but if the other DMA doesn't include
a channel in sat locals, it won't appear in my guide with info.

Here on the Northern Oregon Coast, out of the 5 OTA translators from
Portland, we have two in digital and both show up in the EPG with the
211k. CBS-KOIN TV, only has the 6.1, but PBS-KOAP shows up at 10.1,
10.2, 10.3, and 10.4 (radio), and all info is included in the guide. Of
course I also have locals. One interesting thing is, with the TV set, I
can go to 10.4 (PBS radio) and chose three different radio services, PBS
talk, PBS music, or KMHD Portland, but with the 211k, only the main
audio channel shows up (news), and I have not fiqured out how to switch
it. I could record the radio station to the hard drive if I could fiqure
how to switch it.

Don't know whaty your talking about. I get the epg for both my local OTA's
(Rochester NY) plus other OTA's that I can recive with my antenna
(Syracuse, NY) and some Buffalo NY.
So now that all this is has been discussed, the point is that
1 It does not cost Dish anything to allow it because it's not provided by
them it comes from OTA sources.
2 Any yes there are certain Dish receivers that they are not able to disable
the display of the service.
So Dish is making an effort to disable a free EPG on those Dish receivers
that allow them to disable it. That's annoying and I don't think it helps
them. Few people that are getting free OTA are going to pay for a Dish
feed just to get the EPG.
Actually, all OTA transmission have a built-in EPG (4 to 8 hours) for that
OTA channel. All Digital converter and TV can display this information.
Even some VCR from the late 1990s have this feature as well. So, does
Dish need to provide this service for free?
You are not correct. Dish does not use the OTA PSIP data that stations
provide within their digital signal. ALL Dish guide date is provided by
Tribune Media Services. In order to provide the listings for OTA
stations Dish has to have a data channel for EACH station. The data
channels are in the 14000 - 15999 range and hidden from users. At the
uplink center there has to be equipment to receive and incorporate the
data into the datastream so that receivers can display it along with the
listings for satellite provided channels. There are racks and racks of
equipment at the uplink center to provide the listings and that
equipment (along with the cost of the data) does cost Dish money.
John
As I mentioned in my other post Dish does not use the PSIP data that OTA
stations have to provide. All DVRs have a 10 day guide and PSIP data is
just too limited (as you said most stations only provide 4 - 8 of data)
to use by satellite providers. Also, PSIP is STILL not 100 percent
reliable. As an example, several times a month, one (or more) stations
in my market have PSIP data problems. They usually don't monitor the
data channel and sometimes (until someone calls them) the listings are
out for days at a time. The satellite companies have found a much
better (reliability wise) way to provide the EPG data for OTA stations.

Well I can agree with you in a sort of back-handed way. Since Dish blocks
the info from their OTA channels the "Digital Service" banner that's in each
channel's 1 hour time slots is quite "reliable" Trust me I would prefer
less reliable real info to seeing "Digital Service" in every OTA time
slot.
Be interesting to know which boxes show it, and which do not. My Dish 6000
and 811 both provided it but my VIP211 does not
Well if you are going to be that cheap that you won't pay Dish for something
you can get for free.
Charlie will show you, and not give you the full guide.
Of course if they did, someone might notice at 3 AM that the channel is
still broadcasting a movie, when Dish switches their customers to all night
inforemecials
....That's the nickle and diming that I got fed up with, told Dish what they
can do with their service, and now keeps me bashing Dish.
Funniest part is it probably costs them more to shut off guide info to
specific customers, than if they just offered it to everyone who tune in
those channels.
Oh,...and guess what ?
The pirates (who pay nothing) GET the guide info for ALL channels, only
limited to the amount of memory their reciever allows
Now is that irony or what ?
No they don't, not if the customer is not subscribing to locals.
Although maybe the top end cost packages have different rules, and if you
are paying $150+ per month you get local guides free.

Could be receiver specfic. But on both my vip's (211 and 722) I get full
epg's for all the OTA stations I get from Syracuse and Rochester, NY.

I subscribe to the Rochester, NY locals But I can get syracuse OTA and
sometimes Buffalo. I get full epg's for all. I only pay $77 per month.
That's interesting. I know it works on my 211 because every so often it
will come on for a few days. It's very annoying when I call Dish and am
told it's not possible. Want to scream at them. 'look I was just getting
it for the last 5 days..."

Since Dish offers local channels in every DMA, all the packages include
local channels and would include the OTA channels in the EPG.
Then the original poster is a very silly person ?
