This was an email letter which I sent to Dish Network's Charlie Chat
and just received a response for today (see below).

Hi Charlie,
With the ever-increasing popularity of movies in the Letterbox
format, will Dish in the near future offer us a PPV channel that shows
movies in this format? Now that you have added two additional PPV
channels, don't you think it is time to satisfy a large part of your
subscribers the viewing pleasure of movies as they were intended to be
seen by the director? I would also love to receive the FXM channel
(Movies by Fox), due to their commitment of showing movies in
Letterbox. The Letterbox format time has already come years ago. Over
eight years ago when I was purchasing laser disc, the Letterbox format
at that time was out selling Pan & Scan 10 to 1. I think if you were
to take a poll of the Dish Network subscribers asking their opinions
about viewing movies in the Letterbox format, oppose to Pan & Scan,
you would be amazed in the current popularity of this format.
Some years ago, Video magazine did a poll to what was TV
viewers' biggest grip. The number one grip was the station logo in the
corner of the screen taking away the true theater feeling. I think if
another poll was taken today, you would find that people are becoming
less tolerant to Pan & scan and would be demanding more movies in
Letterbox.
Sincerely,
Don Allis

Dear Don,

Our receivers do have the capability to support "letterbox" format,
but none of our programming is currently being provided in this
format. There is a chance that we will begin providing some
programming, most likely Dish-On-Demand movies, in "letterbox" format
sometime in 1998 or 1999.

If you have any other questions or concerns that you would like
addressed, feel free to write us at <mailto:Feed...@dishnetwork.com>
