My neighbor and I both have fairly high end tv's - mine is a panasonic
34hx50 wide screen and he has a Sony XBR. He has directTV and I have
dish. The difference in picture quality is simply ASTONISHING.
Watching Survivor last night was painful especially in dimly lit
scenes. Even my wife is complaining now.

On the basis of picture quality alone I would switch in a heartbeat
however, I have 3 dishplayers (bugs and all) and a 6000 on the way. I
would hate to lose my equipment investment.

Now the question - When the new spot beam satellites go up, can anyone
speculate on its impact on picture quality ? Are they simply gonna use
the birds to cram in more locals ?

I can say that although picture quality on DirecTV has improved
amazingly, the picture quality of locals has decreased immensely. I
am not sure why this is, but I can be sure that the addition of 10 new
markets this year has something to do with it. Picture quality on
locals was FAR better before the spot beams. Everything is now a bit
grainy (as if it came from a poor OTA signal) and you can see the
compression artifacts. On the bright side, the nationals are superb
(for the time being).

Answer to your last question -- DirecTV seems to be planning on just
cramming in more locals, so you can count on Dish doing the same
thing.

I have an sony XBR and every channel is always clear and sharp. My friend
who has a 32" sony tv always has a crappy picture. You can see pixels
everywhere and looks almost like a regular attena. He had Direct Tv before
Dish and it was exactly the same. He switched to dish because mine was so
clear. I believe that it has to do with the tv, I don't have anything
special and he has gone through two services and two seperate tv's and he
always has poor picture.

Are you sure you have Dish ? I have 3 TVs and all exhibit the problem
to varying degrees. On my 20 inch set in the bedroom, you have to be
close to see the problem, but on my 35in and 34in wide screen, the
problems are obvious at any distance. PQ on PPV remains pretty good
although not quite dvd quality.

Where are those deals for $49 directivo units someone mentioned in
this group.

I did a google search on 'directtivo" and found one for free, including
installation (I forget where it was).
