"Mode Not Supported"

Almost on a daily basis, when attempting to change channels from the guide or using the previous channel button, I get a black screen with the error message "Mode Not Supported." Sometimes it will go
to the requested channel after a 5-10 second pause, other times it won't. On those occasions I just try various buttons on th remote until I get a screen again and can start over.

Does this happen to others and does anyone know why?

TIA.

Alf

I've never seen this myself, but I run Sony Bravias, and this may be a
Korean thing. There's been discussion that Samsung and some other
Korean brands can't handle 480i via HDMI because something goes wrong
during the handshake. The suggested fix is to go to the setup menu on
your DVR and uncheck 480i as a supported resolution. The receiver will
know what to do after that. HDMI re-establishes contact every time you
change the channel, which is why some channels work and some don't.

Some people who turn off their TVs in ways other than by using the
power button (unplugging them, turning off the power strip they're
plugged into, and so on) find that they lose the handshake that way.
The TV has to be turned off properly.

I've got two Samsung (plasma in the family room and LED in the bedroom)
and both support 480i. The only thing I can imagine relative to format
is if the TVs an older model that only supports 1080i at the top end and
the box is trying to send out 1080p.

One work-around is to simply turn off "native" re: formatting on the DVR
and leave it set to the highest output and let the box up-convert 480 to
720 to 1080.

But I'm just guessing.

It does happen to others.

Try resetting your receiver using your remote control or with a red
button reset on your receiver. If that doesn't help I'd call DirecTV and
ask for a replacement receiver. If you have the protection plan this
should be free; otherwise there's a $20 shipping fee.

You may also want to visit www.dbstalk.com, which has many forums
covering DirecTV.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. The TV is a two-year old Samsung 1080p (I would have included this info if I had known that it was a TV-related issue). I will try each suggestion and, if none
work, contact DirecTV.

Thanks again.
