What do these two things have to do with each other at all? Anyone can answer
the question "Where's my daddy?"...even if the answer is "I don't know,"
because he ran off somewhere or "I decided to raise you on my own, because I
didn't know anyone who I would like to raise a child with" and then explain the
biological implications later in life...it's easier than people think to
explain that not all kids have two parents. But really, what do financial
support and answering that question have to do with each other? I'm lost.

Because 1) money does not raise children, parents do. You cannot raise
a child on just money. There's emotional, mental, psychological
raising... 2) I have clear-cut ideas on children, in that they should
have two parents (among other things) 3) Due to strong feelings of
parenting and humanity in general, I find most people these days
shouldn't be having kids, due to reasons of mental ineptitude,
financial reasons, etc. Added to this, I'm suffering from a head cold
and am not as coherent as I would like to be. :P

It's funny but everyone seems to have a bad perception of the fellow
cyberpunk who would post in this newsgroup. Come on, just because we all
frequent a cp newsgroup doesn't make us some kind of antisocial anarchial
psychopaths. What does that say for your selves? Maybe you're right
though, I guess your average cyberpunk or say netrunner would have some sort
of emotional deprevation due to the time and emotions devoted to his
console. This should be posted, what are the psychological characteristics
of a cyberpunk. I think the Hacker FAQ covers this. Must this really be
the case, I think it's going to chage sometime in the very near future.
More and more people covering the span of the limitless cyberspace. Do I
predict a surge in emotional disturbances created by the technological front

technology is not a bad thing, technology is largely communication so maybe
it can be countered, like the electronica scene fusing with computer
technology, robotics, AI, sci-fi, and all that good stuff, I think it could
be considered a cultural expansion much like the rennasiance. Who knows,

Basically, we tend to be fairly introverted and attracted to anything that
yields a reasonable mental challenge.
I'm not sure how a Cyberpunk would compare to a Hacker as far as this goes,
but that depends on your definition of cyberpunk.
A recent US study used the term to describe hackers with anti-social
tendancies who took out their real life frutrations on the internet.
Which doesn't seem to be what the FAQ says, or indeed the manifesto.
Who knows.
and.
Technology stifles evolution and turns us into a weaker complacent species.
Most technology to date, apart from the internet, is aimed at telling us what
they want us to think. Maybe I took the Unabomber's manifesto too
seriously/but:-
TV is the MOST dangerous, because people don't really pay attention to what
their heads are being filled with, but I'd say the Web was going the same
way. God (or your deity of choice.) save Usenet.
Still, if i ever have kids, im moving somewhere without phone lines or TV.

In some cases, technological advancement came about to make up for our
frailties. By relying on the technology and not trying to improve the
problem, which is not always possible, we make ourselves weaker.
Basically, the technology disrupts the process of natural selection,
survival of the fittest. An example I have always thought of though
never voiced before is eye glasses. By using eyeglasses, someone who
normally could not do everything that someone who does not need glasses
could do, can now operate at the same level as everyone else. Say they
end up producing offspring with someone else who's vision is not quite
up to par. Now snowball that out a few generations. You now have a
portion of the population that is dependant on technology to function in
society. Without their glasses, these people are in a sense, weaker
than someone who does not need glasses.
And following this train of logic to its conclusion, we see that as long
as that technology is available, all is well and good and evolution is
working as it should. But if that technology should ever go away, then
those who need glasses would be at a decided disadvangate -- and
evolution would quickly do its dirty work and they would be weeded out.

I can even do reality!
So, what are you trying to say ?!?
That people who wear eye-class shouldn't be allowed to breed ???
Hey, gimme a fucking break... We're not on stone age, if you've noticed... And
what has happened to you're morality, compassion etc... ???
And besides, for what do we need physical attributes btw ?
We don't have to be the strongest & fittest guy around to be able to breed (and
to kill you're meal), if you're noticed, and I wouldn't like if it were so (and
probably most of worlds population too, who aren't atheletes, or have some
impairment...) Nobody's perfect, and shouldn't be...
>So, what are you trying to say ?!?
>That people who wear eye-class shouldn't be allowed to breed ???
No, he's just saying that technology supersedes the survival of the
fittest. It's the victory of human intelligence over brute force.

This is bugging me. The term hacker does NOT mean someone who breaks into
computers for fun/profit. That is a cracker. A hacker is someone who
codes, especially a skilled coder (remember Snow Crash?).
Sorry, I just had to say it.

I hope someone's always there to say it. It needs saying. The
misunderstanding will always be there in the popular media => it's embedded
in the popular culture, but this culture should definitely know.
Now, there are crackers who are cyberpunks, but many cyberpunks are not

Now don't go and flame me, just realize that when you think someone has
it backwards, they could just be a little late.
Don't worry, no argument here. I use hacker in the sense of those who use
it fully, coders. A coder can get offended when someone uses the "hacker"
misnomer is security intrusion. Luckily, I'm only half coder :)
