Human Mutilations - As wildfires roaring around the Chernobyl nuclear
power plant sent fresh clouds of radioactive smoke over a broad area,
scientists announced the first evidence that children born near the
contaminated area have undergone genetic mutilations. Sir Alec
Jefferys, a geneticist who worked on the study at Britain's University
of Leicester, said this does not mean that the children would
necessarily develop diseases such as cancer. Jefferys' group, which
reported its findings in the journal "Nature", collected blood samples
from 79 Belarussian families living in rural areas heavily contaminated
by nuclear fallout from the accident on April 26, 1986. The subjects
had twice as many mutations as a control group composed of British
families not exposed. The mutilations were clearly handed down from
parent to child, permanently coded in the children's genes.
Global Warming Update- The World's Meteorological Agency announced that
analysis of global weather data from 1995 reveals that it was the
hottest year in recorded history. The agency's 11-page "Statement on
the Status of the Global Climate 1995" also reported that the Antarctic
ozone hole lasted longer than ever before, and there were more Atlantic
hurricanes than any years since 1933. Atmospheric concentrations of
carbon dioxide and methane "greenhouse gasses" are blamed for the
continued increase in the average worldwide temperature.
