Sounds like a high-tech version of locking your keys (or key-less
remote) in your car.
My old employer had a hand print scanner controlling access to the data

Someone ended up having to jimmy the lock with a coat hanger. I'm unsure
whether to be glad it wasn't a train wreck or disturbed that breaking into
the IT cage was that easy.

Glad to see someone does. ;-)
Hah, I love such illusions of security. People focus so much on thick
bars and big locks they forget how easy it is to break into something
with common objects.

More things not to do: write malloc(strlen(somestring+1)) when you meant
malloc(strlen(somestring)+1).
