Hello everybody,

I live in the Netherlands and I'm looking for christmas greetings in many
foreign languages, for example:
Merry christmas and a happy new year (English)
Prettige kerstdagen en een gelukkig nieuwjaar (Dutch)

Who can help me to find more international christmas greetings?
If so, mail to: D...@worldaccess.nl

Thanks!

Greetings,

This thing pops up almost every year.
You should check available Network resources before
resorting to a massive crosspost.
Massive crossposting *really* is not the best idea.
Please, check at:

http://www.christmas.com/33-languages.html

it might answer some of your curiosity.

To my knowledge, there is no special expression for Merry christmas in
Arabic or in Berber, does any know some thing about it by the way?

"3iid miilad sa3iid" literally means "Blessed Birthday Festival". The
birthday in question is that of 3issaa ibnu maryamu--Jesus Son of Mary--
whom the Qur'an calls "the Messiah, Allah's prophet, his Word cast into
[the Virgin] Mary, a Spirit from him". While Muslims reject the
Christian notion of the divinity of Jesus, they like Christians, hold
him and his mother in great respect. They do not generally make a formal
observance to mark Jesus's birth, just as they do not mark the birth of
the Prophet Muhammad.

God's grace and peace be upon them both.

Hi friend,
Are you of Berber origin, I mean of Algeria? because I watched a real interesting
program on TV last night which was discussing the events in Algeria, and a segment of it
was regard the Berber and the suffering that they're going through and endure from both
sides of the conflict, the government and the Islamic movement.

Hi Achor
A'aeed Meelad Sa'aeed means Happy birthday and this is different from
'Merry Christmas'

(AM) Hi Slim,
You're right, but it was used in Iraq for Merry Christmas, unless I am forgetting one
more word but lets try it like this "A'aeed Al Meelad Al Majeed Sa'aeed".

BTW, Slim, did you read my e-mail to you?

Slim (Saleem?),

You are correct, however it seems that our friend Ashor simply forgot to
include the definite article "al" on the second word, "meelaad." So,

3eed meelaad sa3eed = Happy Birthday

but,

3eed al-meelaad sa3eed = Merry Christmas.
^^

("3" used to represent the letter 'ein)

So the phrase does indeed render the meaning "Merry Christmas." This is
how my family and friends, all from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and
Iraq, say "Merry Christmas" in Arabic and it is also used in songs and
church hymns.

As for "Happy New Year," well, I haven't heard "3aam sa3eed" very often.
I think it would be more common to hear:

"Kul 3aam wa-'antum bi-khair"

or, the dialectal variation:

"Kil sineh wa-intou tayyebeen."

While a more literal translation might read "Every year and you (are)
well" instead of "Happy New Year," it is what most people who I know would
say to express the sentiment of "Happy New Year" to others.

I think 'Stephen Cardos' gave a detailed and (maybe) a correct answer
for it. It is just because we don't use it in North africa that I don't
know about it. The question is still open for berbers, does anyone knows
how to say 'Merry christmas' in berber?.

Hi Ashor,

Yes, I am Algerian and of berber origin (Kabyl more precisely) I guess
you too. you got a berber name. That is sad what is happening to berbers
and to all Algerians in Algeria. All what I can tell you about that is
that there are berbers in the government and also in the Islamic
movement but the majority is in its own movement and fighting for their
rights (like studying their language 'berber' or Tamazight) and as you
said they get to endure from both the government and the Islamists.

Hello.I am Irish and I would like to tell you that the Irish Gaelic for
'happy Christmas is;"Nollaig (Christmas) Shona (merry/happy...silent 's')
Duit (to you)
If you are talking to more than one person it is "Nollaig shona

Your Portuguese version, "Boas Festas", means "Happy Holidays".
"Merry Christmas" would be "Feliz Natal".

I looked at your list but I couldn't find the Aramaic language of Jesus
Christ, the language of Sir of Chritmas.

I wrote it but I write again

Aramaic:

brik ido d-maulode d-moran wa-briko shato hdato ASSZ [1997]

Whoever wrote Mele Kurisumasu for Japanese made a mistake. It should read
Meri Kurisumasu.

Sadly, with only one percent of the population here being Christian, there
is no celebration of the Savior's glorious birth and no time from work to
celebrate and remember this miracle with my own family. In fact, Christmas
is the busiest time, since everyone is in a rush to get everything
finished before the big New Year's holiday, so I have to work from 9:00
a.m. to 10:00 or 11:30 p.m. instead of the usual 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 or 8:00
p.m. During the last four or so years, there has been a boom of Christmas
decorations in Japan that were never seen anywhere here ten years ago.
Sadly, though, Japanese celebrate Christmas by going to a hotel to have a
romantic dinner and sex with a boyfriend or girlfriend. If they don't have
one, it is a shame, so they desperately search for a companion to have sex
with from the end of November.

Christmas and New Year's are switched in Japan. In the West, we usually
try to spend Christmas with our extended families instead of with a
girlfriend, and then New Year's is spent with a girlfriend or other
friends. In Japan, Christmas, which doesn't really exist here, is spent in
a hotel room with a lover, and then on New Year's they go to the
countryside to gather in extended families for a feast and visiting. Also,
interestingly, it is on New Year's that they visit a Shinto shrine or
sometimes a Buddhist temple, which kind of parallels how we go to church
on Christmas even on a weekday to remember the Savior.

The message to which I am replying appears to be cross-posted, so it may
show up all over the place. If so, I apologize.

P.S. I don't understand where Japanese got the idea that Christmas is a
romantic thing linked to sex in a hotel even outside of Japan, instead of
being with one's family, except that the Japanese adopt everything from
outside Japan and adapt it to their own (often immoral) interpretations.
They also developed something called a Christmas cake (not the fruit cake
that we think of) that is the one and only way even married and single
people in Japan celebrate Christmas. They don't realize that a "Christmas
cake" does not fill the same role in the West, and that it is also part of
the Japanese interpretation.

The Church of the East which originated in Assyria sent a Christian
physician to Japan in 724, he converted the Empress to Christianity.
This ancient church also converted many Chinese to Christianity
starting at about 600 a.d.
