If you happen to catch the made-for-HBO movie "61*", watch for Anthony
Michael Hall in a supporting role. For those not familar with this
film, it's about Roger Maris breaking Babe Ruth's single-season home run
record in 1961. Hall plays Yankees star pitcher "Whitey" Ford. Ford is
not really a central character in the movie (most of the focus is on
Maris and Mickey Mantle), but Hall's role is important enough that he is
shown as a "major" cast member in the ending credits. It's weird to see
Hall -- known mainly for playing geeky characters as a teenager -- as a
grown-up jock.

Saw this last Saturday. The film is pretty good, but it helps if you enjoy
baseball. Hall does a pretty good job with what he's given, but like you
say, he's not the star.

Last I'd heard about him, he did an online chat where he said he might be
working with John Hughes again.

Also, in the equally bad "Out of Bounds".

Edward Scissorhands. Jock.

Do we see a pattern emerging here?

<<Wait, wait, I remember OoB as a guilty pleasure way back when and I
can't agree that he'd already left the geeky roles behind. A homespun
and self-conscious lad eventually winding up in a bunch of action
scenes and proving himself a bit more rugged than he seemed, sure, but
a jock? >>

His character in the movie was a high school quaterback from Iowa(IIRC),
although it's not really relevent to the plot.

<<At best I'll concede that perhaps this film is perhaps where the
transformation of AMH from geek to jock took place, both somewhat
within the film and also due to it being released between Weird
Science and Johnny Be Good.>>

<<(Of course, we don't talk about his SNL year...)>>

Or most of his work for the past decade.
