One was patterned after the Phantom of the Opera, but was set in the
modern day and seemed to involve a good deal of rock. I just checked
the Internet Movie Database and located it: Phantom of the Paradise
(1974). Hmmm, wonder if I can find that one on video.
Re: the other flick, I can remember only a couple of things:
Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" was prominent in the soundtrack.
It was basically a story of two young lovers and it seemed fairly dark.
I searched soundtracks and titles on the Internet Movie Database but
didn't find anything. Any ideas? I saw the film when I was 8-10
years old, so I may be completely off.
Have fun,

I remember seeing it when it came out! I don't remember much, except the
main character is pissed at the record company, tries to steal his
tapes, is chased and gets disfigured by having his face pressed in an album
pressing machine. Apparently this didn't help his temperament, because
after that, it's a bunch of revenge-type killing stuff, mixed in with the
love story. Only when I got older and better read, did I realize it was a
rock "Phantom of the Opera."
I keep thinking it'll turn up on MST3K or USA's Up All Night.

After I shut the computer off and went upstairs, for some bizarre
reason the name Paul LeMat came to me. He starred in the movie, it
was called "Aloha, Bobby and Rose" (1975).
OK, now I can go to sleep!!

great flick. Brian de Palma's best!
The artist who becomes the Phantom has his work (a rock "Faust") stolen
by Paul Williams as Mephistopheles. Iggy Pop appears.
The best "Psycho" shower scene - in which the shower curtain is slashed
and a toilet plunger is thrust through to stifle the occupant.
Maybe I'll see it again...
