If you could take anything you wanted from the 90's back to the 70's
what would it be? I would take the cordless phone!!!!!

I'd take my hi-fi VCR & videocassettes to record all my favorite shows &
commercials. Good examples would be Ricardo Montalban saying, "Rich
corinthian leather" or "In Search Of," hosted by Leonard Nimoy.

Without a second thought--the VCR. I think of all the times I wasn't
allowed to stay up late to see something on TV because it was "a school
night," or that I had to be away from home when something I wanted to see
was on. And, of course, in those days if some program or movie was on, you
watched it when it was on and that was it unless there was a rerun--you
couldn't rewatch it to catch everything, to enjoy it again, to replay it
for your friends who missed it (or make them a copy). I'm also a figure
skating fan, and I'd give anything to be able to tape the skating that was
on TV then (if for no other reason than the nostalgia factor)--of course,
I could make a fortune coming back here and selling the tapes to my fellow
fans...

Yes, the Sony Betamax technically came out in '77, but how many households
were wealthy enough to afford one? Mine sure wasn't.

Anyway, if I had to go back to the '70s and be the same age I was then,
and could take one thing with me, it would unhesitatingly be a VCR...and
oh, yeah, my college diplomas, to prove to my mother that it wouldn't
matter that I got a C in this or that course in high school, I'd still
graduate, get into college and graduate from there too...can I take TWO
things??

I'd quickly invent a machine to prevent me from aging, and I'd take it
back to about '76 or '77 (around age 10-12) and stay there forever. No
work stress, three months off during the summer, not quite old enough to
be distracted by girls :-), able to play baseball all summer, no bills
to pay, the "work day" ends at 2:30...play play play, all the time...

Why did I want to grow up back then?

Seriously, I'd obviously have to take the ol' Power Mac 7200/90 with
me. I would have had enough time as a kid to become an ace programmer
(instead of the garden-variety one) and form my own software empire by
the time I was 21.

Then again, one of the things I cherished as a kid was playing ball
in the park for all eternity, and I'm afraid bringing a computer with
a few addictive games would have made me an awful softball player today,
and made me 150 pounds by age 13...

Actually I'd like to fire up the ol' time machine and take a DAT or
CD-R recorder back to some of those old Euro-space concerts
(Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, etc.). Or especially the P-Funk Earth
Tour(s)!

If I had a time machine, I would do a bunch of things. I would do this:

1920 - Buy a new Model T
1957 - Buy a red Chevy Bel-Air Convertible
1967 - Buy a Volkswagen Beetle and Van
1969 - Buy Akai Reel to Reel/cassette/8 track deck.
1976 - Bring a Hi Fi VCR and JVC Hi Quality tapes and record "The Krofft
Supershow", "Seseme Street" and "Zoom"
1976 - Buy a Large wooden console stereo system with auto turntable and
8 track player/recorder.
1976 - Buy a Panasonic Cassette recorder
1976 - Buy a Cobra 148gtl CB radio.
1977 - Buy "Saturday Night Fever" LP and 8 track, still in the shrink
wrap.
1977 - Go to a Kiss concert.
1979 - Buy 3 or 4 cases of Coca-Cola (10 oz. bottles)
1979 - Buy "Monster Mash" LP/Cass/8t - Children's tape put out by Peter
Pan Records.
1979 - Bring a VCR and record "Marlo and the Magic Movie Machine"
1980 - Buy and Atari 2600 and Get the hell out of the eighties!!!!

I'd bring my 3 VCR's and tons of blank tape so I could record all the
cool stuff off TV (we get to come back to the present when we're done,
don't we?) Of course in 1975 some lucky souls actually had VCR's, but it
seems not enough people actually USED them enough to provide some
time-travel material, prime time with commericals left in, etc. I've
managed to find some stuff from 1978 though so guess I should be glad enough.

If I had a time machine and unlimited funds:

1960's - Buy all the psych-rock and jazz LP's I can find, the more
obscure the better. I'd go to the acid tests (completely sober mind
you, so I could run my video camcorder).

1970's - Buy all the punk/new wave and jazz/fusion records I can cram
into my cockpit, especially the indies, colored vinyl, etc. I'd bring
a DAT deck to Max's and CBGB's and record all the early live Ramones,
Television, Patti Smith and all the other cool groups of that day. I'd
go to Cleveland and tape Pere Ubu.

[I'd skip the 80's!]

Bienvenidos Jason,
A very interesting thread!
Let's see, I think I'd go all the way back to 1816
and stand on the shores of St. Helena and jeer at Napoleon
as he landed there and rub the fact that he'd have to stay
there the rest of his life in his face! I can't stand him!

Then I'd go to 1840 andfind a daguerrotype photographer and have him
take a picture of me with Queen Victoria and Abraham Lincoln.
Then I'd harmonize "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with Thomas Edison
back in 1877 for the first tinfoil phonograph.
Prevent the assasination of Archduke Ferdinand in 1914 and
save us from World War One ( and possibly Two).
Get into a pie fight with Charlie Chaplin on film in 1915.
Harmonize with Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer" in 1927.
Go the the New York World's Fair and see all the sights
of the 'future' and appear on the first broadcasts on NBC while
there in 1939.
From that point on, I'd take my VCR and hook it up ( somehow) to
the earliest monster televisions and tape all those live shows that
received great raves but that have been lost since they were never
kinescoped or videotaped.
Then, I'd adjust the controls of the time machine so I'd have a
force field that around me that would contain oxygen, prevent gamma rays
from harming me and would be at a comfortable 75F. At that point, I
would have the machine send me to the Sea of Tranquility while I was in
my shorts ,t-shirt and sandals and I would walk up to Neil Armstrong
anbd wave at himas soon as he got out of the Eagle Capsule and set his
astronaut boot on the lunar powder. I'd make sure that the whole Earth
would see me for five minutes until my pre-programmed
time was out five minutes later and I'd dash behind the capsule and
disappear. That <sure> sould have made it a more interesting
broadcast!
Then in the '70's I'd buy all the lava lamps I could lay my
hands on and make a fortune when I came back to the 90s.
Oh, then I would show my photographs, records, films, etc. and
totally freak out all of my friends!
What a pipe dream!
Walk Proud and Far,
Leon
