In downtown Brooklyn, everyone was on a cell phone with their loved ones
describing what they saw, including myself. Everyone was taking pictures
and videos, thinking the building would be there tomorrow. There was a lot
of discussion between diverse groups of people about what it was and what it
meant. None of us had any clear info on the street level. All traffic was
at a standstill. We knew something terrible had happened. I said,
"Hundreds of people are dying as we speak." But being NYers, the kind of
people we are, we knew would over come it; we are resiliant.
The subways were not in service, so I took a bus home. Everyone was
discussing it. We found out that the Pentagon had also been hit, and as I
went into my local polling place to cast my mayoral ballot, someone out
front told me that one of the WTC buildings had collapsed. When I was
inside at the voting booth, one of the clerks told me that the other bulidng
had collapsed. This I found incredulous, but I went home and turned on the
TV and watched the tube, and sure enough found that it was true. I then
jumped on the horn and immediately phoned my baby to let her know that I was
ok. I didn't want her to wake up and turn on the news hear about all this
horrible stuff happening and not know whether I was involved, whether I was
in it or not. I wanted her to know that we were okay, that everyone was
healthy, and we would be all right.
Dawn and I spoke and everything WAS okay. She cried, and we talked for a
while, then she had to go to work. I went to sleep, knownig I had to go
back to work tonight no matter what. I got into work late. The subways are
still messed up, and there are hardly any buses running on my line. Since
I"ve been at work, a mere two hours, they've doubled the staff, and between
me and the other lady working tonight, we've handled a couple hundred phone
calls a piece. Many crying people looking for their loved ones, and it's
more than likely bad news. Having gone to the hospital . . . either the
hospital would have notified their family or their loved ones would have
called them to let to know they were okay. We're on disaster status at the
hospital. People from administration are here, handling the command post,
and the phones are jumping toinight, mostly people looking for their loved
ones.
But the indomidable spirit of NY is still walking around and standing proud.
I want you to know that no one panicked. Yes, people ran away from the
smoke and the debris, but no one panicked or went crazy, no hate, no
me-over-anyone-else. Everyone has been working together throughout this
whole thing. Life in NYC continues and will continue to go on, and we'll
deal with anything the way it comes. We'll handle anything they throw our
way.
And if they had any BALLS, they'd meet us on the battlefield. (Obviously,
they don't have any, because of the way they've handled things thus far.)
I miss you guys, and as soon as AT&T gets online again, I'll be back to post
again. God bless America, never bowed, never beaten, inspite of the damage
inflicted. The people who left us today are sleeping with the ghost of
Patrick Henry tonight.

Buddy, I'm not even sure where to start here...even though it's been over for
almost 2 days now, I'm still at a shock, like as if I'm still asleep and just
waiting to wake up from a bad dream. But first, I'd like to say that I'm SOOO
glad that you and Dawna, and all our fellow NYers here weren't in the middle of
all that chaos yesterday! In a way, I'm glad I didn't have any access on the
net in the past 2 days because if I were here and you weren't, I'd be in a mess
worrying and thinking of what happened to you guys...I'm glad I didn't have to
go through that...sigh.
Anyhow, all I can say now is that I'm glad that it's finally over and we can get
on with our lives. But one thing I want to hear in the next few days is that
the government is doing SOMETHING to find those responsible for these horrible
acts and bring them to justice. I won't be able to sleep good at night until
THIS is done. Sigh.
take care and God bless, guys

So good to see you back, Naz. In this very tight group of "friends," we can't
rest until we know all of our own are accounted for. I'm glad you are okay.
