By request, here are the top 100 singles of 1972 according to
a system I devised to measure chart success on the Billboard
Hot 100. It's limited to songs that acheived their peak positions
during calendar year 1972, so big 1972 hits that peaked in December
'71 (such as Melanie's "Brand New Key") or Jan. '73 (such as Carly
Simon's "You're So Vain") are not included.

Great list, but could somebody tell me the lyrics to "I Gotcha" by Joe
Tex. It doesn't ring a bell.

: Tex. It doesn't ring a bell.

You're not missing anything...it was almost a 'rap' song (long before that
term or style appeared); bascially just him saying in a 'jive' style, "I
gotcha! Uh-HUH, -HUH, ya try to sneak by me now, didn't you...uh-HUH,
uh-HUH, -HUH..." and then the 'verse' started, something like, "Promised
me the day that you quit your boyfriend...that I'd be the next one to
ease<?> on you..." That's all I can remember, but it was a HORRIBLE
record!

Not really a reply, but the Chicago Tribune used to have a feature in its
Sunday paper where they would print the lyrics and the guitar chords to a
current song every week. I remember this one being one of them. Wish I
had kept those....

Snippets I remember in no particular order...

I gotcha, uh-huh huh
Thought I didn't see ya now didn't ya
Uh-huh huh
Tried to sneak now by me now didn't ya,
Give it on here - I GOTCHA!

Made me a promise
and you're gonna stick to it.
You shouldn't a promised
If you wasn't gonna do it
Saw me and ran in the other direction
I'll teach you to play with my affection

Give it here (never shoulda promised to me)
Give it here (don't say nuthin' - just)
Give it here (ease up on it now...)
Give it here - owwwwwww - I GOTCHA!

Sort of sounded like "Chick-A-Boom" meets the Staple Singers.

It spent 21 weeks on the Hot 100 (one of, if not the, longest runs
in 1972) with a full half of that (10 weeks) in the Top 10. Sixteen
weeks in the Top 40.

On second thought, more like "Chick-A-Boom" meets James Brown
