Anybody remember this restaurant? Specialty icecream dishes---The Whale?
If it was your birthday the waitresses/waiters would spot you out and
blow a siren and embarrass the hell out of you! Also, if you ordered the
largest icecream dish on the menu! There was an episode on The Bob
Newhart Show that featured this same sort of place. Bob thought he'd be
safe from being spotted out by ordering only a single scoop of vanilla
icecream. Well, it didn't work. They all yelled out...."SINGLE SCOOPER,
SINGLE SCOOPER, THIS MAN IS A PARTY POOPER!!!" Needless to say, Bob
wanted to crawl under the table!!

I remember this place! We used to go to one in Dallas (I think).
Boy, it was a special treat when we got to go to Farrell's! Plus, at
the ages we were, we thought it was exciting when the people gathered
around us on our birthday. No embarrasment there! :)

The ZOO! That was the best. Seemed like half the staff had to carry
it out (on a special set of poles that slid through the dish
handles?), but I think it was just two guys with everyone else banging
tambourines and drums and other noisemakers. It seemed like a ton of
ice cream, but if you had 10 kids (or more) at your Farrell's party,
it didn't last long.
I order the whale once, and the staff gathered around chanting
something like "Never do it! Never eat a whale!" (meaning 'you'll
never do it').
Lot of fun - last time I went to a Farrell's was in 1984 and it
already seemed nostalgic then!

OK, I'll admit it. At the Farrell's on Beach Blvd. in Buena Park, CA.
I once ate a whole Pig Trough. They made a big deal of it afterwards
and came out clapping and such and hung a ribbon on me that said
"I ATE A PIG TROUGH AT FARRELL'S!"
Whew, I feel better now. Thanks for listening.

I think they had to stop putting the little see-through plastic
swizzle-stick animals on the Zoo, cause a kid almost choked to death on
one...I still have a pink platic elephant from a Zoo of yesteryear...

Went to the only one I know to still be standing in East LA last june for
a friend's 34th b-day. We got some icky mess of Ice cream that we could
barely finish. And the Birthday boy INSISTED on his free sundae to go
with it. Right after, we went to see "Twister". I havnt been that sick
since the last time I went to Farrel's--in 6th grade (age 11, 1973)
It was probably nationwide since I am from Virginia and we had one
there.

I found a talk delivered in RealAudio by Bob Farrell, the founder of
Farrell's at:

Farrell's was great.

Last time I was there (that would be the one in Portland, OR), was March
26th, 1985. I was pregnant, and had just gotten off work, telling my
boyfriend, "I've been having labor pains all day. I think tonight's the
night." He then took me to Farrell's for dinner and dessert (go
figure...??). Gotta tell ya... you can't really concentrate on the fun
times and great ice cream while you're havin' labor pains!
But it was a cool place to go for parties as a kid! :)

WE had them in Indianapolis. I had my 16th Birthday party there in
1975. fun, fun ,fun.

This is something I'm interested in, as well. The one that I have always
gone to in Portland, OR, has changed it's name to something like
Portland's Original Ice Cream Parlor...or some such. At any rate, the
sign outside no longer says Farrell's, even tho the place looks the same
from the outside.
