I remember him well. My great-grandmother was a huge fan of his, and when I
was just a lad I would often spend an evening sitting with her by the radio
and listening to Alan's show. The variety of topics he covered was really
amazing, and even back then I could tell he was a very talented guy. He
later moved from WBAL and went with some friends to a smaller station, WCBM
(680AM), where I think he was a regular until sometime in the mid-to-late
1980's.
I wasn't a regular listener at the time, but I recall that there Mr.
Christian was involved in some kind of an investment idea with a number of
listeners. Things did not work out very well and there were some (probably
unfounded) accusations of shady dealings from some disgruntled folks, but
most people seemed to agree that it was just an unfortunate case of bad
business judgement. Alan Christian left the station voluntarily to avoid any
further ill-will, and I haven't heard of him since. WCBM still broadcasts
with many of the same hosts (Tom Marr, Les Kingsolving, etc.), but they
seldom seem to talk about the incident.
If Alan Christian is still involved in radio perhaps someone in another part
of the country will tell us of his current status. I'm kinda curious myself.
Maybe he's on a RealAudio feed somewhere.
