Living in NJ there's only one white castle left in this area that I know of.
Anybody remember the days when WC was like an old fast food drive in. You'd put
your head lights on for service but had to pay a dime to use the rest room.

We still have White Castles all over the place here (Detroit). None of them
ever had "drive up" service, a la A & W. It was only in the last, say, 15
years that they added the drive-thru service similar to McDonald's.

I don't remember ever having to pay to use their restroom.....I do remember
when their burgers only cost 12 cents, though.

Don't remember that from WC. The local Frisch's Big Boy still had the old
drive in service with waitresses on roller skates, no less, during the '70s.
That service is long gone, but they still make the best cherry- and
chocolate-Cokes around, using their own syrup.

I remember the WC service being as you said, Greg. It was the place to go
and eat after the bars closed down.

White Castle is a fast food joint. Famous for its very small (about 2 bites)
but yet tasty hamburgers. In fact they are still about 80 cents a piece.
Sometimes they are referred to as "Sliders" or Castles and can be consumed a
half dozen or more at a time depending on the individual. Whitecastle.com is on
the web I believe where you can read about the legend for yourself. Not for the
faint of heart or weak of stomach.

.....where they serve Murderburgers, Suicide Fries and Killer Cokes. They
are delicious. And, a must-have a coupla times a year. But they repeat!
Over, and over, and over. You'll be tasting them the next day. I usually
knock off about 10 at a sitting (which accounts for the size of me).
Definitely good "drunk food". When you get real wasted, and dont plan to
hold onto your food for long.....there aint nothing better in the world to
have eaten and then give back to nature at the Altare' Porcelain.

As has been mentioned in this thread, no drive-in service for our White
Castles in the Detroit area. Funny though, when I was growing up, a White
Castle burger was kinda known as something we could all afford no matter how
broke we were. Now they've achieved a kind of nostalgia cult status. I
know of a guy out here in AZ who payed to have a bunch of White Castle
burgers frozen and shipped out here from Michigan so that he could serve
them at a party.

Ah, murderburgers, yes. I live a short distance from the nearest White Castle
here in Jersey City. While I don't recall a drive up service, I do remember
lots of other things about this hallowed institution, like, the rumors about
the ketchup dispensers (back when they were those tall plastic types, like
inside a diner) being laced with LSD. When I was a kid, there always seemed
to be either a fight in progress inside or near the Castle, or a mentally
ill and/or drunken derelict sitting in the corner drinking coffee. I also
remember my mom getting a fender bender in the parking lot after retrieving
my friends and me after a day of fun at Great Adventure amusement park.

I used to think - while eating my onion rings - about White Castle that if
Burger King and McDonalds were middle class, WC was lower class. I used to
look at the locations list (Newark, Detroit, etc.) on the side of the burger
container and think, hmmm, I guess that's where all the ghettos are.

I heard a radio commercial for White Castle, they were advertising 10
sliders for I don't remember what price, plus you'd get a free air
freshener. From what I've heard about that place, you'd need it. I've never
eaten there.
Nearest one is about 100 miles from where I live anyway.

Ya know Tom, before anybody calls you a racist, I've got to back you up. In
Saturday Night Fever where John Travolta and what's her name go walking
along 4 Ave., after leaving the restaurant, They almost pass our
neighborhood's old White Castle. But it was trimmed very neatly from the
movie. We would read every week, in our local weekly rag (Sunset News or
Spectator-we had 2), about a fight or something taking place in WC. But they
eventually closed ours. I guess our neighborhood was a little too upscale.
There's only a coupla WC's left in Brooklyn (they also closed the one in
Bensonhurst I believe). There's one in Crown Heights (da ghetto), and one in
lower Sunset Park (el barrio). I had to back you up on this one because it
seems that you are right. (I also believe there's one on Rte.
9-Jersey-Highway Food.)

White Castle is a unique experience. Its unlike any other hamburger you'll ever
have. Even though people know the consequences of eating them, they CRAVE and
go back for more. Time after time, year after year. It's an unsolved mystery.

Interesting comparison! I love Popeye's...even ate at one when I was in
Hollywood (of course it was the only place open that time of night). It's also
got the distinction of being where I worked my first job. I made the best
chicken the franchise owner's wife ever tasted...but they fired me. I was said
to be too slow. I guess I can understand. They did run out of fried chicken
one night while I was working LOL...

Their chicken is decent, albeit a little on the greasy side, they have
excellent red beans and rice.

Yep. Only moving from Cincinnati to a Castle-less area saved me.

The trick, at least for my local WC, was to wait until late before grabbing
some burgers. They didn't always make a point of cleaning the fryer
regularly, so the burgers were well and truly onion-saturated by nightfall.

Don't know about the other locations, but the Detroit-area WCs are mostly out
in the suburbs. (There used to be one in Detroit at Woodward and Sproat, but I
don't know if there are any others actually in the city limits.) Anyway, they
can be found in Madison Heights, Troy, Sterling Heights, Warren, and other
suburbs....hardly the ghetto.

Not good. Really not good. I think the microwaving does something
very bad to the burgers.

When I was a kid in Miami we had Royal Castle.RC was a White Castle
copycat...they were a little different...maybe more like a diner with a
bar and round swivel seats up in the front when you first walked in.
Their burgers were actually a little tastier than WC's...sweeter I
think. They also featured mugs of Birch beer, and you could get
breakfast there. Open 24 hrs a day, just like WC...great to stop into if
you snuck out in the middle of the nite with buddies.
In the movie Goldfinger, there is a street scene that is shot around
Miami where you can see a Royal Castle briefly...don't know if there are
any left in So. Fla. or not...last time I was there didn't see
one...they used to be practically on every corner.
I have a bumper sticker on my Toyota pick-up that says I LOVE(w/heart)
WHITE CASTLES...
I do too :)

I remember when White Castle burgers were $.05 each. They were about 2 1/2" square with five holes in them and were cooked on a bed of chopped onions. We called them "belly bombers". The last place I remember there being waitresses on skates was either in North Bergen, or Wehauken, New Jersey. I knew one of the waitresses and she lost her job when the service was stopped. The last time I ate White Castle was a HUGE mistake.
