Carbonated Prune Juice (or so I was told as a kid).
It's a coke. Otherwise known as liquid gold. It was invented in a drugstore
in Waco in 1888.

What is Dr Pepper? Hmmm
- It is tied for my favorite soda with Ginger Ale. 7UP was in first place
but these days I can't drink it with out vodka in it.
- It was what kept me going the winter of 2000 when I was in Minneapolis. On
some days I had to be at work at 7am (before dawn), a breakfast of Dr Pepper
and brown sugar Pop Tarts gave me the push I needed. I am not a coffee
drinker.
- It is what I make sure I have on hand when Buddy comes over.

They have had it here in the South since the 1970s. It's the Coca-Cola's

You must have a Winn Dixie or two in your neighborhood. ;-)
BTW (attention Nadine), I would just like to point out that Elvis Presley's
favorite carbonated drink was Dr Pepper. There are 1970s era cans still on
display at Graceland.
And Coke must realize this.......they stopped advertising it in the mid
80s.....
Also they gave up on Ramblin Root Beer and liscensed the Barq's name....
In other news, I have seen sort of a small comeback of the Fanta name.....a

was sooo thirsty one summer day, so I stopped by the closest gas
station to get a drink. The soda machine had nothing but Dr.
Pepper!!! Oh gosh! But, I didn't think twice. I wanted a drink at
that moment and Dr. Pepper was my only choice. I drank it the first
time and I was hooked.
I bought a 12-pack Dr. Pepper the next day :-)

Another knockoff we had around here was made by the RC company, and it was
called Dr. Wells - The Cool Doctor. It tasted similar to Dr Pepper, but not
as good. Better than PiBB, though. It was only around for a year or so.
Another drink made by the same company was called Kick, supposedly a
Squirt/Mello Yello/Surge clone.
The most disturbing knockoff I have seen was on a trip to Colorado. I saw
this in Nebraska and Colorado five years ago on a business trip, and have
never seen it anywhere else. It was called - no shit - Dr. Slice. It tasted
like a cross between Cherry Cola Slice (which I haven't seen for about 15
years) and Dr Pepper. I wasn't impressed with the taste. Has anyone else
seen this? When I tell that story around here people say I'm full of shit.
Anyway, enough of my ranting for tonight. Let me know if you've seen this
Dr. Slice anywhere else.
Thanks.

Reminded me of my sophomore year of college girl friend.
The Safeway version of the good Dr. used to be called "The Skipper,"

Now their slogan is "Put it in your head." There's a crudely drawn cartoon

Yeah, there is a website on this that I found recently. It's:
http://www.owu.edu/~deschul/drp/dr.html
I've noticed a lot of these where I live (Hollister, CA). One they
didn't mentined was Sunny Select's Real Dr. The Sunny Select generic
brand is old at the Northern California store chain Nob Hill. Don't
know where outside of California Sunny Slect is available, but I
noticed a website: wwww.sunnyselectsoda.com. Nob Hill once carried
Springfield as its store brand until the chainght by anotherne called
Raley's. A local grocery store in Hollister carried Springfield, but
that store was sold to Safeway, and I cannot find Springfield anywhere
else. Anyone seen Springfield generic brands anywhere? I don't
rememeber them having a Dr Pepper knockoff, which all store brands
seem to. Did anyone know that the Wal Mart brand, Dr Thunder, was
once called Southern Lightning, a reference to Dr Pepper's Southern
heritage. Or that Safeway's Dr Skipper originally was just called
Skipper? And there are several Dr Pepper clones that have the title
Mr. (or Mr, including, of, course Mr Pibb) rather than Dr (or Dr.),
and others that have no title at all.
Anyone notice that Mountain Dew is also cloned by store brands and
other soda makers. Surge, now Mello Yello is Coca-Cola's clone.
Some of the genric brands I have seen include the following. Anyone
familiar with these?
Mountain Lightning--Wal Mart
Mountain Breeze--Safeway
Mountain Mist--Sunny Select
Mountain Stars (Stars and Stripes)
Mountain Best (Best Yet)
Alpine Mist--Albertson's (Lucky had, I believe, Mountain Rush)
Citrus Mountain--American Fare (Kmart)
Citrus Drop (Big K)
Anyone know of any others?
Notice how most of these keep with the mountain theme, though two make
light of the citrus flavoring. And how most contain the word
"mountain" in their names, though two contain related to mountains
(drop, alpine). Which is what Coca-Cola doesn't do with its clone.
And the Shasta Moon Mist appears to be that brand's Mountain Dew
clone. It's citrus-flavored and contains caffeine. Again, I don;t
think Sprngfield ever knocked off Mountain Dew.
Anyone notice the generic and store brands never make a knockoff of
Citra or Squirt or even Fresca? Not that I've seen anyway. Anyone
seen otherwise? Citra, was after, Coke's answer to Squirt. Why don't
the generics follow suit?
> Anyone notice that Mountain Dew is also cloned by store brands and

>
Hy-Vee Food Stores (a supermarket popular in Minnesota and Iowa, where else
I don't know) has a Mountain Dew knockoff called...no kidding..

Have any of you tasted that stuff?? *SHIVERS*
WORST STUFF EVER MADE (the Shasta). One of my buddies got a can in HS
and puked after one sip.
Yeah, I heard about that. In fact on the Dr Pepper knockoff page I
mentined above, the page developer states "a few final words." See
this part of his page:
http://www.owu.edu/~deschul/drp/finalwords.html
Its' too bad he doesn't plan to do a page of Mountain Dew clones,
because there seem to be as many Mountain Dew knockoffs as there are
of Dr Pepper.
Joey Franco's PW, a supermarket chain in Santa Clara County,
California, used to carry Springfield but now carries Western Family,
but dropped the WF sodas and adopted Shasta as its store brand soda.
(I live in Hollister, near Gilroy and have been to their Joey Franco's
PW store). Now I don't know of Western Family soda had a Mountain Dew
clone. And they probably didn't have a clone of Squirt or Citra.
And Shasta probably doesn't either. I'll bet Hy-Vee doesn't knockoff
Citra or Squirt???
There is a brand here in the southwest Illinois area called Ski which is a
really good knock of of Mt.Dew. It contains real orange juice so you get
floaties in your glass, but it is very good.
Cheers!
Champ
Winn Dixie's is called Kountry Mist
BTW, Wal-Mart used to call its Dr Pepper knockoff "Southern Lightning"
>BTW, Wal-Mart used to call its Dr Pepper knockoff "Southern
Lightning"
Yes, I already said that! And it is on the Dr. Pepper clone page I
mentioned on the "Others" page (the clones that have the title "Mr."
and the untitled ones). And Dr Thunder is included as well. And I
read somewhere that the Wal Mart Mountain Dew knockoff was originaly
called Green Lightning. (search for "Mountain Dew knockoffs" to find
this article). And somewhere else on one of these groups soemone
said the Safewy knockoff of Mountain Dew was called "Mist With a
Twist." Was this when Safeway had the store brand soda called
Cragmont?
My town only got a Safeway last year, and the only time I ever got to
drink a can of Cragmont was when I stoped at a Safeway in Monterey in
1990. Anyone remember if Cragmont knocked off Dr Pepper or Mountain
Dew, and what kinds of soda it had? I assume it had cola, diet cola,
caffeine-free cola, lemon-lime, root beer, orange, cream soda---all
the standard soda flavors and types. Best Yet, Stars and Stripes,
American Fare (Kmart), and Sam's Choice (Wal-Mart) don't seem to make
cream sodas--very weird. Anyone get Best Yet or Stars and Stripes at
independent supermarkets in your town? And does anyone still have
Springfield? Or Western Family? Any other generics available
regionally at independent supermarkets, and if so do they have Mtn.
Dew or Dr. Pepper knockoffs?
BTW, Sunny Select is only available in certain stores in California
and Nevada. And Winn Dixie must be in the South somewhere?
What about Simply Soda, the generic sold at Costco? Does anyone know
if it has a Mountian Dew or Dr Pepper knockoff? None is noted on the
Dr P knockoffs page, which just added Mr. Sipp, the knockoff at Smart
and Final, a store chain similar to Costco. How about IGA--any
Mountain Dew knockoff? I don't know where there is an IGA in
California near where I live (probably not very many and not one
nearby).

Cragmont (or GAGMONT, as we called it) had "The Skipper," which later
