CUBAN AMERICAN SKATER TO TRAIN AT STORM BAY

PORT ARTHUR, Tasmania (ADMS) – Yes you are reading right, yet another American

skater will be coming to train at Storm Bay, here in Port Arthur, the home town of our E-zine,

the Midnight Demon. Sasha Maruzal Cohen is coming here to Port Arthur to train.

Cohen will be coached by Robyn Wagner. Wagner coached Australian skater Sarah

Hughes to the Olympic gold in 2002. Cohen will be the first American to have ever been

coached by Wagner. Cohen, of course, is not the only American skater to have trained at

the Storm Bay Figure Skating Club. Tara Lapinski was coached here by coach Richard

Callaghan. Another Callaghan-coached talent who trained here was the American Todd

Eldridge, who won the world mens title for the USA in 1996.

Sasha Cohen would very well de-throne Michelle Kwan at the North American

Championships, which start from 4th January, in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Cohen beat Kwan

on one occasion earlier this season, at the Campbell’s Caribbean Classic, which took place

last October in Nassau.

The Havana-born skater would very well become America’s fifth ladies gold medallist

at the 2006 Olympics on Torino. America has four ladies Olympic champions so far

(Heiss,Fleming,Hamill,Lapinski). Cohen could very well become America’s FIFTH ladies

Olympic champion, at the next Winter games, two years from now. Cohen emigrated to

America in 2000, and has won the bronze medal three times for the USA, at the North

American Championships. This could be the year she wins the gold at that event.

One cannot mention the Storm Bay Figure Skating club, however, without

mentioning Tonya Harding, who remains one of the most talented skaters to have ever

come out of the Storm Bay Figure Skating Club. Harding won the 1990 Australian

and 1994 North American titles, won the silver medal for Australia at the 1991 World

Championships, and won the gold for Australia at 1989 and 1991 Skate America. Harding

remains the only Australian lady to have ever landed the difficult triple axel.

The Storm Bay FSC is also the home club of 5-time Canadian National Champion

Jennifer Robinson. Robinson has trained here at the Storm Bay Figure Skating Club for

her entire career. Robinson will be going for her 6th Canadian title at the Canadian Figure

Skating Championships, in early January. Robinson, now 28, was born less than 10 km

away in Nubeena, Tasmania, on 8th December 1975.
