'Silk` Smitha hangs herself

MADRAS, Sept 23 (UNI & PTI)
Well-known South Indian actress 'Silk` Smitha allegedly committed suicide by
hanging herself at her residence here this morning.

Police said Smitha`s body was found hanging at her house in suburban
Saligramam. A note in Telugu found there indicated that she might have
committed suicide owing to ''financial problems``.

Her body was removed to the government general hospital mortuary for
autopsy, the police said.

She was 35 and was living with her friend, Dr Radhakrishnan.

Smitha had entered films in the late-seventies and has since been popular
mainly for her dance numbers in a number of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and
Malayalam films.

Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Smitha`s first film was Vandi Chakram in which
her name was 'Silk` and hence she came to be known as 'Silk` Smitha.

She had acted in more than 200 films and of late she was acting in a few
Malayalam films. While she acted in glamour roles in Tamil films, she also
acted as a heroine in a number of Telugu films.

The suicide note in Telugu left behind her said she was frustrated with life
as she was in debt. She said many people had benefited from her but nobody
gave her love, affection and compassion.

Hospital sources told PTI that Smitha was brought dead to the hospital this
morning. A man who had accompanied the body said that she had hanged herself
from the ceiling. ''There was a ligature mark around the neck,`` the sources
said.

The police, who are investigating the suicide, said that she had said in her
suicide note in Telugu that she did not have ''peace of mind``. She had also
alleged that those whom she trusted had turned out to be unworthy of her
trust. She being ''uneducated``, the Telugu note was incoherent and
indicated that she was in an agitated state of mind.

She had recently produced two or three pictures which proved to be a
''flop``, leaving her in financial difficulties.
