People's First Party Chairman James Soong followed
with his own trip to Beijing two weeks after Lien.
Soong asserted in a May 11 speech at Beijing's
Qinghua University that independence was not an
option for Taiwan's future, a comment that many of
Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's staunchest
supporters criticized. Soong met PRC President Hu
Jintao and other PRC leaders in Beijing on May 12
and passed the message that Chen Shui-bian was
willing to engage in dialogue with Beijing using a
flexible formulation about what constituted "one
China."
......
There are also many other additional questions about Taiwan asked in
this session, including President Chen's Miami transit, and the planned
U.S. visit by former president Teng-hui Lee. As done in the past, Adam
addressed Chen as "President Chen", though he also said, "I would note
that President Chen's activities while he is in the United States will
be private and unofficial, consistent with the purposes of a transit,"
which sounds more like a reminder than a comment.

QUESTION: Sure. Mr. James Keith mentioned in his
congressional testimony last week that

in China, President Chen Shui-bian asked

to pass a message about one China and
about Taiwan's Government has denied --
there is such a thing. I wonder is there
any clarification in --
MR. ERELI: I don't have anything to add to what Mr.
Keith said in his testimony.
