Feel free to make any additions or corrections. Not interested in sports
people, and only nationally known, historic politicians apply. Don't post
unless you know the exact town someone is from. I define Upstate as anywhere
above NYC.

Um...can I ask how we're defining "upstate celebrity?"

I'll accept John Wayne Bobbitt for his noteriety more than his celebrity, but
let's face it: Oliver North wasn't an upstate native; he was born in Texas,
regardless of from where his parents hail.

And I'll certainly accept Jack Kemp as a Buffalo resident at some point, but
I'm not sure he was a native.

And what's Rod Serling's Syracuse connection? I know he was born in Endicott,
lived in Endicott and Binghamton until he graduated from high school; and spent
a good deal of time in or near Ithaca after he made good in Hollywood. But I
don't know what his connection is with Syracuse.

Just curious.

I missed a most of this thread, but a listing of some famous Rochesterians
can be foud at
http://timeforweb.com/folks.htm A good portion of this listing was compiled
by people on this NG. Not all of them are natives, and there are some sports
figures there as well. I hope this helps.

That's all folks !

Soap opera fans can help here--

The Guiding Light, the matriarch of the Bowers, whatever her name was. I
believe she was from Schenectedy or somewhere thereabouts. I knew someone
who told me she went to school with her, when she died in '82-3ish.

Considering that Spirogyra (or is it "Spyrogira" ...?) is from Buffalo,
that makes Western New York the official "Birthplace of Smooth Jazz." Is
that something we should be proud of, being the home of '90s style elevator
music?

Well, it may not be considered "Upstate," but it was definitely

Can we include made up locations in NY? The soaps General Hospital and
Port Charles are set in "Port Charles" which is indicated to be Upstate
NY. Somewhere near Buffalo; or at least between Buffalo and Rochester, and
close to Canada. OK, so they stretch things a litte... :)

Hey now, Spyro Gyra are far from "elevator music"!

Bob here, the originator of this thread. Some clarifications are needed:
1. This is a thread I start every few months whenever the NG gets
monotonous. I always get great, new, updated info each time.
2. My interpretation of Upstate NY is anything north of NYC.
3. I'm not interested in people who were born elsewhere but have a summer
home in the Catskills or whatever. Only born Upstaters, or at least spent
most of their childhood here.
4. I'm not interested in fictional people or places (these are good ideas
but should be seperate threads).
5. Don't bother posting unless you have solid info.

Thanx,
Bob Plante

I've heard Steve Buscemi has some connection to Seneca Falls, although he was
born in Brooklyn.

Also, someone on The Simpsons' writing staff must be from around here. How
else to explain all the references to our area on the show?

Not from Jamestown. Lived there and developed the 10,000 Manics there.
Born and lived in Westfield, NY. I use to teach there when she and her
