Funny, I'm from Rome. We hate Utica Club. I grew up drinking Genesee.
When friends come to visit they comment on how much they like Genny,
especially the Genny lite. Many years ago (15) I was living in
Washington, DC I went to a popular club that featured unique brews from
non-national breweries. One weekend they featured Utica Club. Everyone
thought it was one of the best beers the club ever brought in!! I guess
taste is a function of how far you live from the brewery.

Having lived in Oswego, I have seen many people
drink Genesee. I never liked it and it gets my vote
for NY's worst beer. Genesee Cream Ale is a different
story. Now living in Virginia Beach, when I want a
special beer treat, the Cream Ale in my choice.

Ah, so many beers, so little time.
Genesee (all varieties), Koch's (regular and Holiday Ale), Utica Club and
Matt's certainly deserve some consideration.
Living in Buffalo, I drank more Genesee than any other, but I'd have to go
back and try all these to come up with a worst beer; fortunately, it has
been that long since I've had any of these ``pilseners.''

My vote would have to be for FX Matts/Utica Club. I don't understand how
a brewery can produce Saranac and then Utica Club. Such range!

what is the deal with Genny Cream Ale? it is totally drinkable, and it
costs less than Bud. It's a mystery to me, but when I go bar-hoppin' in
lil' Ithaca, I love to have a Genny Cream Ale at the Chanticleer.

and the rest of the time,
I'm actually a classy broad,

I think Saranac is from an outside recipe. Matts lets micro-breweries use
their recipies at the Matts plant. Neumans' Albany Amber was also brewed
there for a while, I think. That was the first micro brewery in the
Capital District.

It's not ancient, but an old brew (if you can call it that) that combined both
the aforementioned property along with getting the most bang for your buck....

Does anybody know where Golden Anniversary Beer is brewed? In college at
SUNY-Geneseo, when we were running low on cash (just about every
weekend), we would start looking for that stuff, which we considered to
be a small step above Genny Light and Old Milwaukee.

Hmm, some bad news for this string.
According to the March 6 Buffalo News, Terence J. Fox, former head of
Iroquois Brands Ltd., which made Iroquois Beer here in Buffalo before
moving operations to Connecticut, died in Greenwich Hospital in Grennwich,
Conn., Saturday, March 2, at age 58.
So, let's all raise our favorite or least favoriate New York brew and
offer a toast to Mr. Fox.

Anybody remember Gunther beer? I was 16 in 1975 and you could get a case
of it then for $5 in the mid-Hudson valley. Anybody remember this tasty
brew?

The worst beer has to be Utica Club. When i was still underage
i asked one of my 21+ friends to buy a couple cases for me.
He brought back two cases of Utica Club. It took my roomie and
I three months to get through it.

The only way to get through a bottle of Utica Club is if you're
already drunk on something else.

After reading all the responses about Genny, I saaw some today and
couldn't resist. I picked up a six of cream ale. Been a long time.
You don't find it very often here in Virginia Beach.

I remember Maximus Super. It came in quart can ithink, and it was higher
alcohol comtent than normal beer. It really sucked bad. Canadian Ace also
sucked, but it was equalled by its cousin, Club Ale. We used to get these
up at Sixmile Lake, and get ripped. That was 25-30 years ago.

Worse yet, there was that NE Penna. horse piss named Horlacher's. I think
they had a company rule that you were only allowed tio drink Horlachers if
you worked there, and they would send out spies to the bars to check.
Since the beer sucked and damn few bars even sold it, they had a high
employee turnover. There was also a forgettable brew from Allentown Pa
that began with an *N*. Anybody remember it?

If you think MS was bad, you should have tried all the test batches they made
before they settled on that one. My father was shipping manager at UC. The
employees got to take home the test batches for free. On Sat and Sun, a friend
and I would 1st stop at the brewery for ice for the cooler filled with those
test batches and then head up to Hinkley and Beer Can Beach. Sun and MS, what
a headache.

Just wanted to say I tired Hamms Beer once and it had to be one, if not
the worst beer I have ever tasted, I know drink Rolling Rock made by by
Latrobe Brewing Co. in Latrobe Pa. and I will say they know how to make
one fine beer, even if it isn't made here in N.Y. state I sure enjoy the
smooth tatse of this one.

That would be Neuweiler, Ken. The name's been resurrected recently (about
four years or so) as a contract-brewed beer done at The Lion, in Wilkes-
Barre, PA. It's not bad, but it's not setting the world on fire, either.
As an honorary upstater (my wife's family is from Dover Plains (mom-side)
and Wellsville/Cuba (dad-side)) and devoted beer-lover, I would cast my
votes for best and worst at the feet of one brewery: Matt's. The Saranac
beers (and the contract-brewed Brooklyn beers that Matt's makes) are some
of the best on the East Coast, let alone NY. But Utica Club is the name
which springs to mind whenever the "What's the worst beer?" question
comes up!
