1.25.93 1.0 BUFFALO LOST - A GUIDE TO THE PAST
----------------------------------

The following list is the roll call of Buffalo's past ... places, people and
things we grew up with, but are no longer in existence. Even though the listed
losses to buffalo may be gone, they still take a signifigant role in the
collective memories of most Buffalonians.

GUIDELINES

For a place to be added to the Buffalo Lost list, it should meet the followiung
criteria.

1) It would be a place that is familiar to people born between 1955 and 1970
(twentysomething and thirtysomething generation folks). Please, no pining over
the loss of IRC streetcar lines, the Park Towne Whatever Casino Lounge or this
great big band that used to play at Crystal Beach "during the war".

2) It cannot be a one time event (i.e. 1973 Stanley Cup Finals, Blizzard of
'77, Norwood missing the big one, etc). It should be a physical location or a
part of the local culture. If there is enough demand a "Buffalo Memories" list
will be created.

3) It must be a fairly important place, something that a good deal of
Buffalonians would remember. That little deli on Bailey that was torn down for
a CVS might have been around forever, but most people throughout the Niagara
Frontier probably don't remember it.

4) It should preferably be a locally owned establishment, ahthough national
franchises and out-of-town run businesses that play a major role in our
memories can be considered in come cases - Red Barn (Rochester) is fondly
remembered, Stop N' Go (Texas) is not.

The list organizer is open to changes and suggestions for the guidelines, if
they reinforce and frther the intent of the list.

As someone who is a relative newcomer to Buffalo and does not have this past,

There are plenty still around. There's one on Sheridan Drive at Delaware Av.,
on Main St. in Clarence, and in East Amherst, among many other locations.\

If you want to be more accurate try this:

! Super Duper (supermarket) - Now renamed Jubilee, SD survives in a few outlying
areas.

>Boulevard
>Mall in Amherst (bankrupt)

It's still there too. But one of the larger chain stores in it should be on
this list:

! Kleinhans (department store) - bankrupt, closed down.

Under special places add:

! Grand Island casino (I couldn't categorize it properly) - fire

>* Memorial Auditorium - Main Street, Buffalo (future uncertain if new Aud is
>built)

If the Crossroads project is built, it will be on the site of the old Aud
(which would be good-when I went to a Bandits game last spring (my first ever
visit to the Aud) I can honestly say that its age and organization almost make
Madison Square Garden look good. The Aud's saving grace is that, unlike MSG,
the rink/court is at ground level, not five stories up).

>* Your Host (restaurant chain) - Various locations (fading)

I think there's one still left on Sheridan in Tonawanda near the boulevard.

The Crossroads project? What's this all about?

Its only been 4 years since I left UB, but it sounds like a lot has happened.
Is the Bluenote jazz club still there (Main St. next to Freddie's) or
the Central Park Grill (further down Main, near the windshield wiper plant)?
Two great places...

What's become of the old psychiatric institution near Buff State?

Oh, here's one... Mighty Taco at the corner of Sheridan and... what's the
name of the road connecting the Main Street campus to Amherst? Anyway,
it was across from Duff's. Passed through there on quite a few late nights as
did about 90% of the dorm residents, the cat even ate their Mexican variation
on the "belly bomber".

Well West Side psychiatric is still there. My photography teacher
in high school used to tell us stories about how when he used to teach
driver ED at Buf State the patients would bust out of the ward and jump
on the cars. No lie. He said that one time a patient totally pressed his
penis against the windshield. I was laughing pretty hard then.

How about Love Canal? Any liberals out there? I go there every

Speaking of Bells: (God what an intro)

Who remembers when it was Parkedge? (What park?)

Also, who remembers the Bonanza right there next to Bells and Might Taco
that is now a Rite Aid?

Also, some interesting trivia about those bulidings (maybe all those writing
a FAQ qould be interested)...those buildings were originally aircraft hangars
for Curtis Wright (as in Kitty Hawk and flying the plane) and the street that
I used to live on (Curtis Parkway) is where the runway was. Kind of
interesting. If you're really interested, bust out a map and check it out.
You can totally see the lay of the land as being air strips.

Their Optical Department still exists on Niagra Falls Boulevard next to
Manakins...what used to be the Three Coins? I think....
Anyway...GC went way under....and they were a crappy store anyway. They used
to advertise a certain price when you picked the merchandise up off the shelf
and then charge a higher price when you got to the register. I remember it
used to take a billion years to get out of there too...slow registers. Man,
How many G.I. Joe guys did I buy in there?

Now, a TOPS international exists in it's place.

Better have another look, Dan. . . BTW: that's Sheridan Drive at Delaware Rd...
and although the painted signage on the wall still says 'Bell's Bazaar', there
is *already* a 'Quality Market' sign out front!

The Crossroads project is the new arena plan which isn't definite yet, to be
called, predictably enough, The Crossroads. As far as I know, it's supposed to
be a combination arena/mall, although not in one building, unlike the Hartford
Civic Center.

The big problem is how to pay for it. It only took off recently when the Sabres
offered to sweeten the pot a bit financially and add luxury boxes.

>
>Its only been 4 years since I left UB, but it sounds like a lot has happened.

As it stands, the county holds the cards (the state can only contribute so much)
and that would mean some tax hikes that would not be too popular, given that
property taxes had to go up as is, and the sales tax is already as high as it
can get.

The mention of Mighty Taco reminded me: during the 70's Taco Bell tried to
enter the Buffalo market and failed. Several years later they were
all closed, so far as I know. If you've ever been to a Taco Bell
you know why they didn't go over in Buffalo. Buffalonians have too many
good food choices to bother with the overpriced, tasteless stuff Taco Bell
serves. Unfortunately Michiganders aren't as smart. The presence of
Taco Bells here doesn't bother me - I know to stay away, but
you can't get decent pizza here. Most Michigander pizzarias apparently
think pizza sauce is something you get out of a can of Contadina and put on
with a paint brush. Yech! One of my favorite pizza places in WNY was
Ilio DePaolo's on South Park near Mile Strip (I think. I think it's in
Blasdell. Never mind - I can find it!).

Anyway, did Taco Bell ever try for a comeback?

wait, I know, I'll go look in the phone book. Yep, there's two in the buffalo
phone book, the one that I previously mentioned, and there is one in North
Tonawanda.

I can't say that I've ever been to the one in North Tonawanda, but the one at
the mall is always doing good business. I go there often, but the only real
reason that I go there is because they have free refills on the soda and some
of their real cheap foods like a bean burrito aren't bad.

I think that was just the one at Eggert and Sheridan in Niagara Falls ... even
after it became a Bells, it was called "Bells Parkedge", with the separate
"Parkedge Liquors". Not to sound politically incorrect, but I remember people
calling that store the "Jewish Supermarket" because of it's _huge_ Kosher

temples and Hebrew schools, and the many references to Jewish holidays in their
in-store advertising ... "Get ready for Passover with these great deals from
Parkedge...". Funny, because the store wasn't in a location known for a high
Jewish population, like North Buffalo or Williamsville.

How about the old Two-Guys store chain? There was one where
Super Flea is on Walden Ave in Cheektowaga and where the Silo/
TJ Maxx/Northtown Fabrics is on Sheridan/Niagara Falls Blvd.
Area. I really don't remember them that well (being a small
child at that point...)

Ok, and here's another- the Colvin Movie theatre on Colvin and
Kenmore Avenue in Tonawanda/Kenmore area? That was torn down
in order to make room for Senior Citizens apartments.

Now, another Supermarket- Loblaw's. They were small neighborhood
supermarkets. I think that they may have been taken over by Bell's.
I know that the smaller one's are now thing's like Fay's...

And re: Bell's on Sheridan and the Delawares. That used to be

a Hengerer's department store.

Also-what about various catholic high schools which have closed in
recent years???

recent years???

Well, no wonder they're leaving then-the area is pretty saturated with gas

I guess (a further reason not to put it on the list, come to think of it) that

I have to mention this to Dan and whoever else lived and grew up in Tonawanda.
Does anyone remember the restaurant on Sheridan drive that is inbetween parker
and like...loretta? I think. I remember it being this: (There were several
generations of chains)

The first, and this is my favorite, was called Sambo's. It was a
blatantly racist name. Kind of like a Howard Johnsons place.

Then, surprisingly enough, it became a Howard Johnsons. I think. I
may be wrong about this

Then it was a Pizza Hut. No big deal.

Now? I think it's a doctor's office.

I just had to mention this becuase of Sambo's.

Taco Bell, as has been noted, has two stores in the area-the Galleria one, and
one in North Tonawanda. Some of those other chains are also limited-I don't
remember any Jack in the Boxes in NJ when I was growing up. You might also add

Bob's Big Boy was limited to California for the longest time.
Hardee's is owned by the same company that owns Roy Rogers, and in fact has been
turning some RRs into Hardee's since they bought them.

Hmm...There's a Stop 'n' Go in Bricktown, NJ (I heard that Texas police call
them Stop 'n' Rob) and the only Atlantic in NJ along Route 9 near Barnegat.
They also have some stores in the Syracuse area.
And does Tim Horton count as one of those Buffalo-only Canadian chains?

Sambo's were pretty much everywhere in the United States. They changed their
name to Sam's because of pressure from the NAACP and other civil rights groups.
Shortly after the name change, the chain folded. At one time Sambo's was
bigger than Denny's or any of the other national chains of "family resturants".

It's in the list ... but the store that's now the Super Flea used to be GEX, a
membership-only discount department store. Some Cheektowaga old timers still
call Super Flea "GEX". That was the only one in Buffalo.

Incidentally, one "Cheektowagism" I've noticed is to call places by their old
names, if something changed names within the past 20 years. Thus, Super Flea
is GEX, many Bells stores are Loblaws, and the Thruway Mall is called the
Thruway Plaza. My Dad is guilty of the same thing, not knowing where the
Stuffed Mushroom is unless you call it the "Park Casino", even though it hasn't
been that since the 1950s, among other places.

: Now, another Supermarket- Loblaw's. They were small neighborhood

: supermarkets. I think that they may have been taken over by Bell's.
: I know that the smaller one's are now thing's like Fay's...

There were some big Loblaw's stores as well. Loblaw's is on the list, too, and
is alive and well in Metro Toronto and, believe it or not, the Kansas City
area. Go figure.

: Also-what about various catholic high schools which have closed in
: recent years???

To me, one of the few non-Catholics from Buffalo :), it might be easier
creating a list of what's still open. Some were closed, some merged, but the
great majority are still alive and well. The Catholic high schools disn't play
a big role in my life, so it might be a difficult task. Anyone want to make
such a list?

How about a list of old BPS school numbers and the new names for the schools? I
think School 80 and 68, both in the Kensington area, are the only numbered
schools left. Are there any new high schools in the City?

Uncle John's Pancake House was never located at the Alberta Drive corner where Alice's Kitchen once was. It was further east on Sheridan, just to the west of the old Sweet Home Elementary School, now where Sheridan Center Plaza is currently located.
