That depends on what kind of general thing you want to do. If you've never
been to the State Museum or the Albany Institute of History and Art you
could easily spend three hours in either of them. Or you could hop on the
Northway and be in Saratoga Springs in about a half hour. Saratoga has one
of the most thriving and pleasant downtown areas of any city of any size in
the state, chock full of shops, restaurants, bars - and people!
Or you could hop over to Troy and try to beg some money from RPI like all
the politicians are trying to do. The latest one today says that the city
has been providing RPI services for 150 years and its about time they were
repaid. It's a lot like when someone wins the lottery and all the long-lost
relatives come out of the woodwork.

I wouldn't miss the NYS Museum. You can get a start on what they
have at;

I can't imagine *not* being able to spend a few hours there no matter
what your interests are, but if you have a special interest there
might be another place that would serve as well.
Parking around the museum can be troublesome-- so if you have a
choice, walk, call a cab, or hop a bus.

[forget Tom's suggestion of RPI-- by Monday the line of politicians
with their hands out will be longer than 3 hours]

Look at the Capitol, the Empire Plaza, the Court of Appeals, the Albany County
Courthouse (the Court Security Officers gleefully gave me a full tour of the
Diallo sites last time I was up there). Also check out 183 Eagle St, and
downtowns cobblestone streets.

I'll be off to Utica for a meeting, or I'd suggest lunch. However, I'd suggest
wandering around the Capitol of you've never done that. I always enjoy the
state museum. And the Albany Institute of History and Art, just up Washington
Avenue from the Capitol, is a fine museum.
If it's a nice day, check out the view from the top of the Corning tower, or
walk along the Hudson. Washington Park also offers nice strolling, but not
quite so much in winter.
Lark Street between Washington and Madison is the city's bohemian zone, with
some interesting shops.
If you want to go for a drive, head out to Thatcher Park. The views are
amazing! It'll take about 40 minutes or so from Albany.
Any more questions?

In fact, it is a lunch meeting I will be attending.

Nearly everyone has mentioned the NYS Museum and that is going to require a full
afternoon, I think, as it would be a part of seeing the Legislative Building at
the other end of the mall. A nice day all together. I haven't been on the
Capitol Mall in a very long time.
I will be at DEC headquarters on the other side of the city (Wolf Road) and will
be coming from the east on I90. So, even a short hike along 90 somewhere would
be a nice way to get a little exercise.
Again,
Thanks.

Have a cocktail at Barnaby's, on State Street next to the boarded up
Hotel Wellington, and take a look at the wonderful old Albany photos
that adorn the walls.

Aye, that's a good idea. But I've decided that there is apparently so much to do
in the capitol city for an afternoon that I'm going to take a hike at a wildlife
sanctuary in Old Chatham on the way home instead.
