There was a movie named "Lieberstraum" (I think I got the spelling
right) that was filmed in and around Binghamton.
It's available on VHS, and is kind of a wierd horror movie. It
features an historic building in Binghamton that is
is somehow posessed, I think. I believe it was an "R" rated film. I
remember thinking that the was movie very strange.
There were a few others, but I can't think of any that are widely
available.

They just filmed two more in Troy within the last several months but I
didn't pay much attention as to what the titles are or who stars in them.
Troy has the perfect settings for anything that is set in the late 1800's
with all the fine old Victorian architecture.
: "The Bostonians" was filed in Troy. "You Can Count on Me" was filmed in
: Athens or Phoenicia, I think. Does anybody know where "Slap Shot" was
: filmed? "Brother's Keeper," a fascinating documentary, was filmed in the
: Mohawk Valley or vicinity as I recall. "Nobody's Fool," appears to have been
: filmed in real snow and, at any rate, is not untrue to life in declining
: mill towns in the upper Hudson and eastern Mohawk valleys.I know that there
: have been several movies filmed in Troy--can anyone else help on this? These
: are just the ones that leap to mind.
"Slap Shot" was filmed in Syracuse. "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" was
shot, at least some of it, in Batavia and surrounding areas.

"Nobody's Fool" starring Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy, was filmed in
the Mid-Hudson Valley (Beacon, Fishkill and Poughkeepsie) during the
winter of '94 when there were 17 snowstorms. I believe most of the
outdoor scenes were done in Beacon although the novel (I think) places
the story in Ballston Spa. I heard that the producers asked the town
not to proceed with already planned renovations of a rundown section
until after the filming was completed.

Oh, that's right. The latest summer tourism brochure has now placed us in
"Central Leatherstocking Country." I believe that's exaggerating a tad.

YES there is, I can't think of the name either...but they did truck snow in
from the ski area south of the city. They used a house near Delaware park.

Both "Ironweed" and "Nobody's Fool" featured scenes shot in Hudson. "Age of
Innocence" featured Kinderhook's historic Van Allen House. Has anyone pointed
out that the Internet Movie Database is searchable by location?

I have been told that part of the upcoming movie "AI" was filmed in Albany.
Nobody's Fool is one of my favorite movies. It captures the feel of a
dying upstate town perfectly. Here's my review of it:
http://www.davehitt.com/movies/moviesrecent.html#Fool
Parts of "The Time Machine" were filmed in Schenectady. (I signed up
as an extra, but never go called. I found out later they were using
real costumes from the period, and people were smaller then. Guess
they didn't need someone my size.)
I'm surprised no one mentioned "Scent of a Woman," filmed at the Emma
Willard School in Troy. Another movie was recently shot there as
well.
Parts of "Billy Bathgate" were filmed at the Saratoga Race Track.

The book is set in Gloversville under another name. So are "Mohawk" and "The
Risk Pool."
But it was in the northern Catskills or even up into the Helderbergs,
somewhere in that Bermuda Triangle south of Albany andwWest of the Hudson.

Any idea which parts?

I never knew I lived in the Bermuda Triangle.

Exactly why it was hard to suspend the disbelief a bit. Having lived in
Rochester and known this was supposed to be a town in New York called
Scottsville, I couldn't help but think "Well, it's sure not the
Scottsville I know." And the people in the theater (some of who many have
lived in Scottsville themselves) must have gotten a chuckle. It would have
been easier for me to buy if the town had a different name, or if it was
supposed to be "Scottsville, Massachusetts" or something.
Wow, did the tombstones ever look like Zolotone-painted Styrofoam in that
cute little hillside cemetery. TAN: I only called it the Bermuda Triangle
because to people who don't know about it it's as though nothing there
exists at all.

Would Oneonta be in said triangle?

part of the "twin tiers" and "southern tier". what's up with that?
maybe they meant delaware cty, but i still don't equate either county

The highway scenes (Automobiles) were filmed on the 219 south of
Buffalo, not near Batavia.
It's all relative. When I'm driving from Albany to Buffalo and see the exit
for Batavia I feel I'm almost there.

And 'Indian Joe Nolan' of the Clinton Comets. The Clinton Arena
still stands and is used by the Clinton Youth Hockey league.
We make a couple trips out there each year to play youth-hockey, and
for the first 1/2 dozen trips I always had this eery feeling that I'd
been there before. Then somebody said 'Hey, didja know they filmed
Slapshot here?', and it hit me. It hasn't changed much. [Clinton

why? are you in oneonta? ;)
speaking of bermuda triangles, there is a section of the thruway headed
west from syracuse to rochester that used to defy explanation for me.
i would be driving over the speed limit but yet it would take forever to
get through - and the same for the stretch between cortland and syracuse
on route 81. very strange. i used to get stuck in time warps often
on those roads. :/ course, it would have all been solved if i had
cruise control but my stupid 1990 chevy cavalier didn't have that feature.

Hi-- original poster, here. :-)
No, I actually meant Binghamton and Glens Falls. My vacation will be taking me to
those two places, and their surroundings. I just wanted to see what they look
like, before I get there.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I have to get to Hollywood Video, don't

I can buy the Southern Tier stuff. I mean, you can't get much more
"southern" in upstate than Binghamton without wandering over to that
dreaded nebulous dividing line between Downstate and Upstate. In
Binghamton, nobody argues about where Binghamton ends and the next
geographical territory begins. When you reach the sign that says "Welcome
to Pennsylvania," you know.

Yep. One of my kids teacher was a stand in for one of the actors.

that is true, but i think the southern tier designation shouldn't lump
in places like otsego county and (sometimes) i even heard chenango lumped
in on tv stations in the binghamton area.

That is because Oneonta has no TV stations of its own. We get
Binghamton, Syracuse, Schenectady and Utica stations which serve as our
"local" stations. Unfortunately, we lost all of our NYC programming
years ago.

Amy,
I've not seen "The Horse Whisperer", but I came close to the filming
crew. We were at a very small restaurant (we're talking about 10
tables), that was just the film folk and my family.
It was fascinating to hear their technical talk.
Some neighbor kids were extras in "The Age of Innocence", which
was filmed in Troy.
