Hi Sara,

Wow! You mean there was a whole moment of truth there somewhere? I must have
blinked. I'm not sure I'd call it "Monicagate," either. Calls up some rather
Freudian images.

Hey MK,

You know, that's interesting. I saw a couple of weeks ago that Gene is
apparently into model rail-roading, you're doing all of these crafty things,
Tee paints these wonderful racoons on rocks (check out her web-site, if you
haven't, they're neat) and Carol and I have been carving and painting
red-wood Santa Clauses. I wonder how many of us spent our youth in those
military craft shops. Or perhaps it's a repressed creativity that blossoms
later on in life. Anybody else out there who's an artist?

Finally, a chance to catch up. I've been moving, and unpacking (again).
Finally got a nice place; a 4 bedroom house as opposed to a 2 bedroom
trailer...and a tiny one bedroom flat before that. Wow. This is my
seventh move in a year and a half, and even I'm ready to stop for a
little while! Now, if I can just hide Gary's Egyptian Pharoah bust
somewhere...it just looks kinda funny sitting on my antique American
school desk that sits next to my "occupied Japan" collectibles...lol.
This is what ya get for our eclectic brat tastes, with bric-a-brac
collected from the four corners of the earth. Okay...back to the
boxes...anyone want about 23 trees' worth of crumpled, white newsprint?

I think that you could say this group is absolutely crawling with writers.
In fact, I've been flamed on this group by some of the most articulate people

Oh yes, Bob. I can remember making ceramics at the Andrews AFB hobby shop,
and developing and printing photos at the Lowry AFB hobby shop. I also
remember trying to polish my gold colored (not real gold, my dad was a SSgt
then) at the Rhein Main AB hobby shop on a powered wire wheel. It got caught
(dumb to try) and went all over the place. I still have some of those
ceramics and pictures though, and that was in the 1950's.

Dan, I am being fair! Gary has the WHOLE den to decorate as he so
chooses...lol. Actually, I'm as happy as a pig in a poodle (or is that
pug in a poodle <eg> ) because I have what used to be the whole dining
room to decorate with my antiques and craftwork. It used to be a formal
dining room near the front door of the house, but 1) We don't have a
table and chairs yet and 2) I'd not be able to wheel around a table in
there. The rest of the house is pretty much a conglomeration of tastes;
the afore-mentioned Pharoah bust, antiques, and various other "twentieth
century tag sale" items. It's not much, but it's starting to look like
home. It just takes a little longer to feel like home...I think...I
haven't been "home" yet...lol. In any case, it feels good to be
surrounded by the people and things that mean the world to me; and after
all, isn't that what home really is?

I have to say tho for my education, including almost getting a degree in

writing i don't often share, most of its packed away, i find myself very
private about it, and suprised myself by saying i did, perhaps because im more
comfortable here. Go figure. If you caught it in a momentary lapse of reason

frustrated at being unable to find some freinds. sigh, well back to my solitary
desk, I have got to finish printing all this stuff to find my mistakes :)

However, he failed to tell you about a 2 foot statue of Bast that is

Perhaps you are dyslexic? Lots of people are, apparently, in varying
degrees, I suppose. I'm reading a book on General Patton, & it turns out
HE was dyslexic. Couldn't spell worth a darn. And obviously didn't make
much of a difference, except, oddly, to his self-esteem.

Hi Tambra,

That's interesting, because you hit a couple of things that she talks about,
right on the head. That it's not unusual for artists to have these internal
censors that critisize the hell out of us, and one of the examples she uses
is: "You can't be a writer, you can't even spell!"

And another thing she talks about is how important it is to NOT expose
yourself to people who are critical and with whom you don't feel safe. And
isn't it neat that we feel safe talking about our writing and interests on
this group? Thank you, group, you are very nice people.

Hi Marilyn,

Well, shucks, ma'am, thank you. I enjoy reading your posts, as well. How
are you liking the morning pages in The Artist's Way? Carol turned me on to
her about a year ago and I've become absolutely addicted. The day just
doesn't feel right unless I sit down and write those three pages every
morning.

I agree with you about the level of education in the Brat community. I don't
think I've encountered a single person on this group who was stupid or
ill-informed. Some radically different perspectives, yes, but all with sound
reasoning and experience behind them. One of the few places where flames come

What's interesting to me is that as my kids get out of college, they are
starting to move around the country. Son # 1 went out to San Francisco
for several months earlier this year, and advises that he will be moving
from here (Chicago) to New York City after Xmas.

Son # 2 says he thinks he'll head out to Portland for a while in a few
weeks.

Son # 3, still in college, wants to study in England next year.

These kids treat going across the country as easily as walking down the
street. I'm not sure how to think about this.

And another thing she talks about is how important it is to NOT expose
yourself to people who are critical and with whom you don't feel safe.

Problem with that is that if you want to be published, you will have to finally
meet editors. And they are critical and they don't make you feel safe.
My theory is to find people whose opinon you trust and listen to what they have
to say. Then decide what of their criticism you will use.

One of the vagaries of a motor-skill such as touch typing is things like
that. Once an error pattern like that has started, it's hard as h*** to
get rid of it.

Another difficulty with touch typing that one learns nowadays, is that it
is not a good idea to come home after an evening of libations, ales and
single malt scotch in my case, and think 'why not pop onto usenet for a
minute or two?' As with another activity that could be mentioned, while
the spirit may be willing, the execution invariably will leave something

Hey Anne,

Don't know if you've been in the Big Ugly long enough to know about the
Stonehenge. Some guy decides to do a sub-division in Dallas called The
Stonehenge. He raises just enough money to build this miniature repro of the
real Stonehenge in an empty field, then goes bust. Five years later, someone
else buys the property and is going to bulldoze the rock circle. This woman
takes him to court, saying that her group has been secretly worshipping there
during the Full Moons and that makes it a church. Says her right to worship
where she chooses is being infringed. Only in Texas.

Congrats on getting into your house. If you'll send Carol or me a mailing

LOL -- Wanna know how I wrecked my knee? I was living in an upstairs
apartment, and one day I fell UP the stairs (gracefully, I might add; didn't
bruise anything but my feelings) and my kids got wind of it and insisted I move
downstairs. Got moved in, piled the empty boxes outside on the enclosed patio,
and a week later, decided it was past time to haul said boxes to the dumpster.
Grabbed a half dozen or so, opened the gate with my right hand, balancing the
boxes in my left, started down TWO MEASLEY stone steps and felt my load
beginning to shift to the left (no political implications, now, hear?) and it
seemed I was headed for a crash landing into the parking lot about four feet
below. I recovered quickly, shifting my weight to counter the listing to the
port side, and congratulated myself for my quick reflexes. I continued on to
the dumpster.....Next day, I noticed a bruise, then the pain....
Is there a zodiac sign for a klutz?

Hope your folks are doing as well as I am.....Dr. says I won't have to have
physical therapy, and once the swelling goes away in a week or so, I should be
able to walk a bit better/faster. Just in time for Christmas shopping!
Cheers!

There seem to be several of us here with that religious persuasion.

So, you're one of THEM, huh? I endured three years of ice packs on my legs
for hours and grueling therapy on machines reminescent of Spanish Inquisition
torture devices... and you *admit* to doing this to people? It's a dirty job,
but someone's got to do it!

Following my stroke [fortunately a mild one, leaving me with minor
impairment, I hasten to say] I was put into the hands of three flavors of
therapists, physical, speech, and occupational, for a week in a rehab
facility following a week in the hospital. They were as fine, dedicated,
and caring a group of people as I have ever met in my life. This, despite
the fact that, as with my DIs at Parris Island, they were asking and
making me do things that I *knew* I couldn't do. Watching their handling
of people much worse off than I was with various combinations of
enthusiasm, cajollery, insults, and anger, anything in their bag of tricks
that would work with a given patient, was fascinating. How they can stand
the emotional toll that that work must entail is beyond me. The physical
therapy continued on an outpatient basis with another PT practice 1 hr/2x/
week for a couple of months.

Heidi, you have my admiration for your career choice.

[You rock, girlfriend.]

not physical therapy. :)

I believe you, Heidi, I was badly burned at the age of 10 and I do remember
the Pain and Torture including the whirl pool where they took the bandages
off. I was at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver in 1952 and if I hadn't
been in a military hospital I would probably have died. They had just
learned a lot about burns in the Korean War. It all worked, I survived and
not crippling. You are good people!

Cheers,
Frank

I'm an Episcopalian, too. I've heard "Whiskeypalian", but never the Ten
Suggestions. I do know I've seen folks squirm a little as they are thundered
out during the Penitential Office in Lent.
BTW, I am a craddle Episcopalian, born in Baptist Hospital and baptized the day
I was born by a Roman Catholic priest as he was the only one available. I was
not expected to live 24 hours. Were I to live I was to be deaf, dumb,
incapable of learning and unable to walk. Three out of four ain't bad. <g>
