I was playing a Squirrel Nut Zippers cd and my Mom said oh she's trying
to sound like mmrppha mmrrphim. Okay she didn't actually say that, but
I didn't hear what she DID say and now she can't remember what I'm
talking about!!! (ahh parents!)
SO, does anyone know of a vintage lounge songstress who sang in that
high pitched Betty Boop voice like Whalen does? anyone? anyone?
Bueller? Bueller?

Thanx,

In article <3949CF71...@flash.net>

Some possibilities might be -

Mae Quetzel (The voice of Betty Boop as well as Olive
Oyl - She did have some musical recordings)
Yma Sumac (High 'n sometimes squeaky, always dramatic)
Libby Holman ([Pre]Depression-era song siren, who sang
risque torch songs)
Carmen Miranda (Sang with bands such as those which the
Zippers emulate)

All I can think of, though none of these names look like
that which you've written..

Hey! Thanks! It ~could be Libby? I'll never know. Next time Mom pops in
I'll play it again and see what she thinks.
I love Yma Sumac. Best Mayan contralto I've ever heard~!
Thanks again for the tips!

I've never heard the Squirrel Nut Zippers but the only lady I know
jazz/lounge-wise who sounds like Betty Boop is is a singer/songwriter named
Blossom Dearie.
