Greetings one and all, this is to let you know that Stained Pages is
currently on indefinite hiatus. For those of you that were anxiously
awaiting Issue #5 (all three of you) :), many of the articles that were
slated for that issue (Lee Press-On & the Nails, Rhea's Obsession, Miss
Shirley's Cocktail Scene Wisdom, the San Francisco travel guide) will be
appearing on the Stained Web Site within the next month or so.

Meanwhile, The House of Stained will be putting together a smaller, more
frequent zine (hopefully on a quarterly basis, but that could change)
entitled "Extravaganza!!" This will be a full size publication with a
changing theme. Issue #1 will be the _Glam_ issue, and submissions are
highly encouraged. I'm looking for photos, artwork, stories, rants and
reviews, all related to Glam or Glamour. (Note that these terms are open
to interpretation).

I'm also looking for ads (very reasonable rates), as well as ad trades
with other zines. Issue #1 of Extravaganza will be available in late
July, and pricing information will be available by the end of April.
Feel free to contact me for more details or for submission guidelines.

Cheers,
Sheryl
Editrix, Extravanganza!! Zine.
and Girl In Charge,

Just wanted to add a few comments to the post my sweetums Sheryl made
last night:

Not only that, but I intend to keep the web version of Stained Pages
"alive" - not only will it be an archive for the contents of the four
paper issues of SP (currently, about half of that stuff is online, with
more due as soon as I get around to doing it...), but I plan to continue
adding new and previously unseen stuff on a semi-regular basis, starting
with the articles mentioned above that were originally intended for
issue 5.

Just to clarify slightly: Unlike SP, which was written/compiled/edited/etc.
as a collaborative effort by Sheryl and myself, this will be Sheryl's
baby. That's not to say, of course, that I won't be sticking my nose,
hands, and other body parts (ewww!) into the works from time to time,
but when I do, it'll be as a contributor as opposed to as a head honcho
type.

Future Stained plans also include a thingie called WeaselDinge. Details
are sketchy, but the brains behind it will be our pal Mark (who has
written lots of cool things for SP in the past) with help/interference
from me. I have no idea what format it will take, what the contents will
be, when it will be out, etc., but rest assured that it will be... um,
"interesting". Yeah, that's it. "Interesting". Heh.

Hey. New here, and don't know if this topic has been hashed yet, but I
was hoping we could start a list/discussion of cool films that exemplify
"lounge" society and culture. Ones I can think of include:

Breakfast at Tiffany's (the party scenes are great)
The Apartment
Pillow Talk (don't knock it 'till you see the movie... and Rock Hudson's
apartment!)

What else, kids?

Actually, not much has been hashed out on this newsgroup at all, it's
been pretty dead since it's creation. This is a great topic, however, so
hopefully it'll get some conversation going...

: I was hoping we could start a list/discussion of cool films that exemplify

: "lounge" society and culture. Ones I can think of include:
:
: Breakfast at Tiffany's (the party scenes are great)

Undoubtedly. And the soundtrack is some of Mancini's finest work
(although I should add a caveat that I'm far from being a Mancini expert,
so I'm basing this only on owning the "Days of Wine & Roses" boxset and
listening to a few other bits & peices).

: The Apartment

Don't think I've seen this one...

: Pillow Talk (don't knock it 'till you see the movie... and Rock Hudson's
: apartment!)

I honestly can't recall if I've seen this one or not, although I *have*
seen Send Me No Flowers, a film that was made 5 years later with the same
Day/Hudson/Randall team (how many films did they make together, anyway?).
Can't say it was great, but it had some good, campy moments. Not very
"lounge", though.

I was going to add The Party, of course, but you did so already with your
follow-up. Words cannot describe how much I love this movie. I crack up
just *thinking* about lines like "birdie num-nums" and "howdy, pardner!". :-)

And once again, the Mancini soundtrack is wonderful! Too bad it's not
available on CD. Even the box set I mention above only includes "Nothing
To Lose", and it's not even the version from the film (sung by the French
girl who's name totally escapes me...), but an orchestral version with a
sixties EZ-style chorus of voices. Urgh. (It's worth noting, however,
that a very cool version with the original vocal appears on the album
"Sacre Bleu!" by Dimitri From Paris. The music has been replaced with a
new piano and horn arrangement, but it still sounds really swank, and the
rest of the album is an excellent hybrid of lounge/EZ sounds and trip
hop/acid jazz.)

Also, in reference to your inclusion of James Bond films, I'll agree, but
only the Connery films. And continuing in the spy genre, one cannot
forget the Matt Helm series, featuring Dean Martin as the world's
drunkest secret agent. These films really play up the campiness of the
genre, which I really dig. And there is booze 'n' babes a'plenty - what
could be more lounge than that? :-)

You're probably right about that one, but "Pillow Talk" is worth it just to
see the decorating. Doris plays an interior decorator who does up Rock's
apartment just to piss him off... and wait till you see the results! This comes
on AMC all the time... or maybe it's Encore, I can't remember.

YES! I am so glad you agree. This is one of my all-time favorites. The scene
at the dinner table is hilarious.

If I ever find this on vinyl I will scream. Then buy it. :)

Must agree that only Connery's Bond is hip enough to be lounge. :) I'm afraid I
missed the Matt Helm series; what were those titles?
