I keep hearing or seeing reference to some great popularity of lounge, and
while it is more popular than it was for the last few decades... I just
don't see any big lounge "nation" as it were.

Take this newsgroup verses other newsgroups... please! (RIP HENNY)

but seriously... if there was some huge subculturous underground growing
mass of loungers out there, this newsgroup would be hoppin, but it aint.
not that I would mind of course. I wanna hear some opinions from other
people about what you all think is the deal.

I am a musician, so I am around people who love music a lot, and only a
couple have barely a passing interest in lounge. My friends don't seem to
"get it" and so I have to keep it to myself like it is some huge secret. I
love this music and I would really dig sharing it with others or at least
chatting about good bands and whatnot, but where is everyone else in this
silly lounge "nation" as they like to call it?

cheers!
joel

it's nothing more than another trend. no nation.

it's business and money, too. Hype it up and sell as many Ultra Lounge (there
are 18 slickly packaged volumes) as possible.

thank god that cigar nonsense passed. boy, was that silly.

In article <199803220223...@ladder03.news.aol.com>,
basi...@aol.comß says...

yep, but it can't be all that bad to attract people to something they were
previously unaware of. If the music wasn't worth buying... the ultra
lounge comps would have not sold, and they would have to stop.

I understand that its all money... what I meant with the question is: why
lounge? It usually takes a lot of momentum to make a trend. Look at all
that modern ska crap (another great example of big buisness making a
trend)
I just don't even see much of a momentum at all behind
exotica/lounge/space age pop... at least the whole "ska thing" is based
on a bunch of highly loyal fans in "scenes" around the country. Here in
Milwaukee, there is no such lounge equivalent... not that I am
*complaining*. Most "scenes" are more fitting of a high school cafeteria
and do more to hurt the music than help, so I am glad there isn't one
here. I am simply wondering "why lounge?". I am most likely noticing
this because I live in an area of the country that is easily 2 or 3 years
behind the coasts in the trend department.

cheers!

Good point, and well taken... but, by the same token, I actually LIKE
most of that music and waited YEARS for much of it to be released on
CD... so, as far as trends go, this one is fine by me. Anything that
enhances my CD collection and gives me music I enjoy (and will, long
after the passing of the fashion), is fine by me!

Regards!

yes, they are a good way to become familiar with new artists.

do not overlook the other fine reissues such as:
Scamp's Martin Denny two-fers
Scamp's La Dolce Henke
Scamp's Music For TV Dinners
Moog (pronounced like VOGUE) pioneers Jean Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley
Sound Gallery
Easy Tempo
Vampyros Lesbos
Schulmadchen Report

....there are countless others although i should point out that not all fit
into the category of "lounge".

all are very NOW / go-go 60's sounds and great listening.

I think "lounge music" had to come back. This music is not a new sound. It just
went dormant for a while. Sooner or later younger people where going to dig
those old records out of their parents or grandparents closets and give them a
spin. Perhaps bored with the top 40 crap they where force-feed by big labels
and obediant radio stations. This music is some how familiar. I remember
hearing Dean, Frank, and Jerry Vale playing in the backround of my youth. The
music is warm and comforting to me. It is of high quailty. It has style, class,
character. Perhapes it has aged like a fine wine and now is this time to take a
taste............
