With all the latest modern swing titles coming out, I was wondering if
anyone could post their reviews of any recent cds they have heard. Here is
my list if anyone cares
(this is all an opinion thing. Don't hate me because I liked CPD's new one)

BBVD- In my opinion, the best there is. Only track 4 doesn't really
interest me (Minnie The Moocher) At least 8 of the tunes send me toe
tapping wherever I am. Best track is You, Me, the bottle. I can listen over
and over again 9/10

CPD(zoot suit riot) - Great toe tapping cd. Love the songs, love everything
about 6 tracks. Some get annoying however. (zoot suit riot for one) The
ones that do work, really work. 7.5/10

RCR(Mugzy's Move) - Fairly good cd. I like Beyond The Sea the most. Hey
Pachuco is fun, while Great Mondelo is kind of good. Worth a listen, not a
lifetime. 6.5/10

Swingerhead- Great cd. It's fun all the way through. He just wants to cha
cha is really cool with a great beat. Pick Up The Phone is good too. Candy
For Breakfast has a great nostalgic feel, and lady With Big Cigar has a
good rhythm. 8.5/10

Lee Press On And The Nails- Geez, what can I say. The guy's motto is Swing
Or Die. As for the cd (Jump Swing From Hell) Istanbul is a good track as
are most of the songs. His version of Sing Sing Sing is, well, decide for
yourself. 8/10

Remember, this is my judgement on recent stuff. Don't flame. But please,
put up your own reviews of your cds and tastes.

Would you consider "The Squirrel Nut Zippers" swing? I have their CD and it
rocks.
I haven't heard the Big Bad voodoo Daddy's new one yet. I have the original
"jump jive and Wail" and it's a lot better than BBVD's. It's on Blue's Masters
#5 i think
Don't use acronyms anymore. I had to sit and figure out who you were talking
about. and I still don't know whoe some were.

Instead of doing personal reviews, I thought I might just point out
some of my favorite groups: Lost Continentals, Hipster Daddy-O and
the Handgrenades, The New Morty Show, Ray Gelato, Hot Head Swing
Band (local here in Minneapolis, MN), and my favorite... Eddie Reed
Big Band. Most of these groups play pretty uptempo stuff which is
what I like! I have links to most of these groups on my Swanktown
web page (http://www.visi.com/~gwolfe/swanktown.shtml) or you can
get most of these CDs mail order from HepCat Records:
http://www.hepcat.com/records/index.html. They *do* have reviews
of most of the CDs you can buy there.

My favorite newly aquired cd is Steve Lucky and The Rhumba Bums featuring Miss
Carmen Getit "Come out swingin". Lots of energy, great vocals, swinging music.
Most songs make ya wanna dance, and if they don't, they make ya wanna sit back
and just listen to the great music. My favorite songs:
Jumptown
Rumpus Room Honeymoon
Daddy-o
Where's My Gravy?
Not Now

Go out and get this *hot* cd!

I'd actually give this a 9.5, personally. Uncle Greggo and I plan our (sadly
infrequent) trips to the west coast around the LPN touring schedule. We've
seen them live twice, and if you think the CD is great, they are
fan-fucking-tastic live! The man climbs atop his vibes and then flys through
the air. If you get that chance to see these guys, don't you dare pass it up.

Ok, so there's this band from Chicago called The Mighty Blue Kings, and
although they're not swing, they're jump blues, they're probably one of my
favorite bands around. Great vocals, harmonizing, bass lines, and horns. They
do an amazing replica of "Can't Stop it" (although the original band escapes my
mind at this moment). I'm waiting for them to show up around my area (NYC).
Everyone should check their CDs out, "Meet Me in Uptown", and "Come one, Come
all". They're definitely worth it....

Not to mention, The Atomic Fireballs, Flying Nuetrinos, The Ultra Lounge sets,
Nick Palumbo and the Flipped Fedoras, and many many more in the NYC area.

Oh God, oh God... even if they sounded bad (which they don't at all!) they put
on a helluva show! Ross Bon is one of few crooners around today.

I just scored the Ultra Lounge sampler, with the leopard skin cover no
less. Great stuff & a great place to start. I was lucky enough to score it
new in a used store for $8.99. Tower wanted over $20 for it. It's a
wonderful collection and a great intro to the entire catalogue.
Another great place to look, if you have a turntable, is your parents
record collection. When my Dad died my Mom gave me all his albums - I never
knew he was in top this
kind of stuff. I knew about his Sinatra & Big Band stuff, but he had some
real jems!
Plus IMHO, you can never go wrong with a good Dean Martin CD. He was just
the coolest of the famous rat pack.Of course, my opinion.
Stay Cool...
