as much as I totally *love* listening to these bands, along with The
Mighty Blue Kings, Royal Crown Review, and other similar bands...
I really don't think they fall under the lounge culture. They are great
for dancing the swing to, and their music is more of the big band jazz
style with a swing beat. and in the case of Cherry Poppin Daddies, they
mix in ska and rock and all sorts of other things.
Lounge music is all about chillin out with your friends and mixing...
the bands you mentioned are definately the kind of music that might appeal
to a listener of lounge... but they really are their "own thing".
cheers!

And of course there's Lee Press-On and the Nails from San Francisco, and from
Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra.
There's an interview with Lee Press-On on the Stained website. URL is in the
sig.

Miss Shirley

The Debut album from Love Jones (the group, not the movie), called "Here's
To The Losers" was released several years ago, but it's a really good
example of "New Lounge". Very cool. You can probably find it in the used
bin of your local hip record shop, or get lucky and find a new copy
somewhere. I don't know if it's still in print. Their second album
"Powerful Pain Relief" wasn't as lounge-influenced (more of a R&B/Funk
backbeat), but it's pretty good as well. There's also an ultra-rare live
album, on vinyl only. I forget what it's called, but if anyone's
interested, I'll post the title in a later post.
Also, there was a really cool band I saw a couple of times here in L.A.
called The Complainers. Sort of Mancini and Jobim meet the Three Stooges.
Don't know what happened to them, or if they put any records out. Check out
the "Livin' Lounge" CD (Discussed earlier on A.C.L.) for some other
contemporary lounge bands.
Cheers,
Martini
You should check out Joey Altruda's work... he used to do work with his
Latin/Ska/Jazz/Swing band called Jump With Joey... but lately he's been
doing a side project with Ernest Ranglin and Plas Johnson that is
mostly lounge-y stuff with some afro-jazz/ska thrown in. Great stuff.
they have 2 CDs out and they should be easy to find.
cheers!
